It's rusted, and has a thin place just above the exhaust manifold. I'm thinking of cutting it off at that point. Then put a bolt down inside the tub. Then put locking pliers ( Vice Grips ) on the outside of the tube. The bolt will stop the tub from being crushed flat. Then pull the tub out. Will that work on a 78 403 ? I've done this on Chevy V8's before. Bob Dunahugh

I did that on my 403, and I put a washer on my slide hammer, and clamped the vise grips over it and onto the tube and over the slide hammer so I could use the slide to bang it out. Took some force to get it moving, but once it started it popped right out.
I should add someone on here or the photo site had an example of where they drilled a hole in their vice grips to bolt their slide hammer through.
