Who sells it? Also, will that work for vinyl (I'm guessing) upholstery? I don't want to use a cleaner that'll start to make the plastic crumble or a dye that'll start peeling. Thanks.

Kryon Fusion, off white as I remember, picked it up at the hardware store in
Fallbrook. I find the exact color and post later.

Some have had good luck with Fusion. I haven't.
I'm a fan of SEM products.
http://www.semproducts.com/index.php/product-catalog/flexible-coatings/color-coat/

I get it locally at an auto upholstery shop but there are a number of
places that stock it around town. Or the Interwebs, of course.

Used it on my dash - the soft parts and the hard parts. Also used it on
the door panels of my car. I covered a bright, 70s-vintage blue vinyl
with a light gray. My left knee rests on one spot while driving and it
hasn't worn thru to the blue in 7 years.

The fact is, I painted both upper caps in my coach with plain old Krylon
white about 8 years ago. It's not like they get any wear, after all.

I also used the Krylon Fusion on my caps and have been happy with the results. I think the main point is to follow the directions and be sure to clean, clean, clean the caps before applying the product.

The SEM product is also great, but harder to find.

...which is another part of my question. Seems the PO must have cleaned the rear end cap with some kind of solvent based cleaner because it was crumbling everywhere. I was fortunate to get another end cap but am scared to clean it for fear of having the same thing happen again. So, what common household/garage cleaners do I use and which to avoid like the plague?

Larry,

I've always had really good luck with "Simple Green" It is mild but thorough. While I like and have used Krylon Fusion extensively (available at most hardware stores) I think SEM Trim Paint might be a better choice. You may have to go to an automotive refinishing supplier for this, but it seems to be a better product. Plus, you can ask for advice from a specialist who (hopefully) knows the product line better than the average "Helpful Hardware Man".

You want to be removing all grease and oils.
Dawn dish-washing detergent (just the green stuff, not the
Oil-of-Olay-added stuff.) is a fabulous grease cutter.
Scrub the heck out of it. Lots of soap and water.

And if you're really anal you can get a gallon can of grease/silicone
remover from any auto paint shop to wipe it down after washing it.

FWIW, SEM makes their own cleaner. They also have you spray on a clear
"softener" just before you paint. Literally makes the paint melt into
the plastic. Overkill for the end caps, however. Keep the SEM stuff
in mind if you intend to change the dash or ABS cockpit side panel color.

I had my front cap out of the coach and repaired some cracks about 10 years ago. I scrubbed the entire cap with Simple Green and rinsed it thoroughly. I then painted it with Krylon Fusion. 10 years later it looks just liked it did the day I painted it.

I do not know how you would clean it in the coach since it takes a lot of water to thoroughly rinse off all of the Simple Green.

I have used both Krylon fusion, and SEM vinyl dye. The SEM product is by
far the best and I notice that it is the preferred product used by the guys
who have the mobil used car lot and dealership service routes for interior
repairs.

Would SEM vinyl dye work well on vinyl (duh!) upholstery, with all the flexing? I have a couple of areas that are just nasty looking.

I'm also interested in this product. I drive a '96 Cadillac with an enormous dash and windshield. Most you see are cracked from the sun but mine is in great shape except for discoloration. I've tried liquids and pastes to try to bring the color back out but I think the answer would be to repaint. I suppose this would require removal of the windshield but I don't think that is a big deal.

Question: does either product have any protective chemicals in them or would just the coating prevent sun damage(like painting a house)? The dash is made of unobtanium and I really want to keep it from cracking.

I plan on using this on my GMC - (GMC content) Smile

Stick,

You are very lucky to have a dash that is in good shape, however, be careful when you decide to paint it and don't put a lot of
pressure at any one point you may find that it is bit brittle and wind up with a crack.

Depending on the angle the windshield intersects the dash you may or may not have to remove it. If it is a very tight angle you'll
play merry hell trying to mask off the windshield and / or clean off any overspray.

Taking the windshield out (without breaking it) may or may not be a big deal, talk to a professional windshield installer about what
you want to do and see what he says.

Regards,
Rob M.
