Well I grabbed the cap on the flats with the biggest pair of channel locks I have, and tapped the channel locks back and forth with a large nylon hammer. Third or fourth hit the cap moved, and after that it was just a matter of working it back and forth.

Original Post:

OK, so I'm checking the brakes and bearings and after removing the dust cover I see there is an inner cover, so far recessed that I can't get at it with anything. It looks like someone grabbed it with a big pair of channel locks at some point. Someone must know an easy way to pop this off, and it is probably so simple that this is a great opportunity to make me look reeeeeeeeeally stupid in front of the whole forum.

Oh, and I looked in the manual in section 5-17, and it only shows the outer cap, not this inner one.

I've wondered the same thing on my '73. Had to destroy them to inspect the bearings. Is the inner one required? Seems just the outer one would suffice, or did I miss something?

Did you put new ones on after you destroyed the old ones? The manuals, both the full one and the 1976 supplement, don't even show the inner one.

What I do that works fo me, is to use curved end pry bar and using the hub
as the fulcrum, place the curved side down..Place the end of the bar
against the cap and pry until you see it move...Rotate 180 degrees and do
the same thing.. Works for me..

I've just use my biggest flat-blade screwdriver and a hammer.
I end up with a couple depressed areas but not as big as the "channel
lock" notches you have.

Since yours are already pretty crunchy I'd just use those channel locks...

There is a tool for doing this. It looks like a screwdriver with a bent tip.

Some people have brazed a nut to the outside center of the cover so that they can screw in a bolt to give something to grab onto to pull the cover

Without any tool, worrying it back and forth will usually cause it to pop out.
