Depends on how much loss you can tolerate. 2 gauge would give about 2% loss. 4 gauge would give about 4% loss.

There are a lot of sites on the Unternet that has this information. Google "wire gauge 12 volts"

I'm not sure what you are up to so I would recommend 4 ga. as a starting point.

When you figure your voltage drop be sure to count the distance both ways, if the load is 10 ft from the battery, you need to add the return 10 ft also. So 20 ft would be your real distance in this example.

Unless you are using the frame for the ground side. Then you are not worrying about return wires.

I am in the process of building a new dash, and acquiring new gauges for it. One of the gauges I just got (real reasonable) is a Stewart Warner 100amp. I've always had a amp gauge in my cars...usually a 30amp or so. But 30 is not big enough for the alternator I'm running in the coach. My alternator is a 100amp. I plan to break into the wire at the alternator, run up to the dash gauge and back...a total of 10 ft. I know that an amp gauge is not necessary...a volt meter will tell me all I need to know, but I want an amp gauge, and I'm gonna put the volt gauge right next to it. A little at a time I'm picking up the gauges I need. Just got a NOS SW oil pressure gauge yesterday off eBay. Now trying to find a SW 6K tach. Anybody got one?...or any other SW gauges?

Larry - are you sure that that 100 amp gauge doesn't work from a shunt with small wires going to the gauge. Those that work with a shunt are very accurate but don't have all that amperage going through a meter behind your dash.

I would check on the specs of the gauge before I ordered the wire.

Look for those gauges in old Studebakers and large trucks.

I wouldn't do it that way for several safery and reliability issues plus efficient loss. Take Emery's advice for a 2013 era shunt type

Plus an accurate Volt meter might give more usable info. If it can maintain 13.8-14.2 then it is supplying enough current to maintain Voltage. Trend in new vehicles is Volt meters.

Yup, I have an old Studebaker (56 golden hawk) so I am quite familiar with the gauges. Also have several extras (Studebaker) that I plan to use in the dash.

How do I identify a amp gauge that is the "shunt" type?

If new they will usually come with the shunt and the two wires to the gauge just attach on each side of the shunt. The gauges will have small screws to attach the wires. I would think that if a gauge is built to actually run 100 amps through it would have to have very large screws such as those on a large circuit breaker or battery screws (bolts).

Forgot to say that if it has a product number on the gauge you should be able to look it up on the net.

Re ammeter. I think I know that if you hook an ammeter to the output of the alternator it will indicate the charging amps from the alternator but how could it read the draw from the batteries ? In the past I;ve owned cars with a factory installed ammeter that "seemed" to indicated the current flow into the battery and out of the battery. These were factory installed guages and I never saw any indication of battery current size wires in the dash. Of course back then I wasn't smart enough to know to look.

Larry,

You've obviously looked on Ebay, but a search there showed several 6-K tachs as well as numerous other SW gauges

I have all Stewart Warner gauges in my '53 Jeep including an 8=K tach that someone gave me from his boat. Trouble is, it's a V-8 tach and I have it hooked up to a V-6. Needless to say, it's not accurate. The 35 - 40 year old tach does not have a switch for different calibrations on it. If I could find a 6-cyl tach to replace it with, I'd pass this one on to you cheap. Smile
