Hi all,
I am the "them" that, along with my bride of 53 years, is in charge of the Coos Bay, OR, three club GMC rally. I appreciate all the great comments about this rally and we really do think it will be a bang up affair. We are already virtually sold out of the full hook up spaces and lots of folks will be in the immediately adjacent dry camping, the hotel with special room rates, staying out on the near by sand dunes with their buggies, or elsewhere and there is still 60 days to go before the rally begins. There are informal caravans coming from western Canada, the northwest Rockies, from Colorado, the south west, the LA basin, the Bay area and the northwest along with all those enjoying the trip alone.
Here are a couple of things to keep in mind as you think and comment about rallies and their location.
With the one exception of GMCMI, all GMC rallies held all over the US are put on by volunteers. That's right, we do this as our way of giving back to the GMC community without one red dime of compensation for anyone. A week end rally with a couple of pot lucks and maybe one catered meal or a work location overnight rally is a lot different from a week long rally with catered meals for several hundred people, exclusive use of a room large enough to accommodate such a crowd, all the very large AV equipment necessary so everyone can see and hear the goings on, transportation for several hundred people to and from a couple of off-site events, 24 hour per day security, 24 hour per day emergency services, room for the vendors to really strut their stuff as they are the future and the life blood for all of us, regional publicity, multiple seminar tracks, etc. And, then there are the countless volunteer hours required to handle tens of thousands of dollars and all the registration
"special requests" and phone calls that come along with putting on one of these big things.
Next, add in the time and skill required for volunteers to negotiate the cost for all the catered food, the facilities, equipment, events, policies, and everything else. The final piece to the puzzle is finding places large enough to handle a sizable event. There are only a few places in Oregon that can, and most require the vast majority of attendees to dry camp for five or six days. In the case of the Coos Bay rally we have exclusive use of a really nice RV park with just over 100 full hook up spots and immediately adjacent dry camping for several hundred more. FMCA held an area rally here recently with about 500 coaches (80% in dry camping) and everyone raved about how great it was. We also have exclusive use of a very large ball room with huge AV screens, projectors, mics, amps, podiums, chairs, tables, linens, table decorations, fabulous catered food, free transportation to and from anywhere in the Coos Bay area for our attendees, transportation to and from the two
off-site special events, key access to the hot tubs and swimming pool over looking the commercial shipping traffic on Coos Bay, the work out room, 24 hour per day security and emergency services, and on and on. But, getting all this stuff while still creating a reasonable rally cost for all the attendees is no simple task. And, remember, this is all done by volunteers just like you. No special skills, no special training, no more time than you have in your busy day.
So, when considering all the issues surrounding large rallies, be sure to toss your hat in the ring to volunteer right along with your comments and opinions about where they should be held and how they should be run. The more of you who volunteer, the easier it is for everyone and the more flexibility we can all find for the locations and the scheduling. Oh, and BTW, there is still plenty of room for you at this rally. The dry camping area will have water and sewer service, there is no need for air conditioning or a heater this time of year in Coos Bay so all you really need is a generator for a couple of hours a day, and you will be only a few steps away from the RV park for all those wonderful activities and the same distance away from the ball room for all the catered meals and inside events. Rob,
I believe Kim's position (Convention Director???) is a paid position. It is a HUGE job and SHOULD be paid. No one is going broke on what the director is paid and I'm sure she is not getting rich on that small stipend either.

dry camping area will have water and sewer service, there is no need for
air conditioning or a heater this time of year in Coos Bay so all you
really need is a generator for a couple of hours a day, and you will be
only a few steps away from the RV park for all those wonderful activities

- there are 2 transmitters in the connection area
- it will be free in the dry camping area if you are
a member of the rally.
- get there early and park near the Yurt, signal is down to about 1 mb.
- bring your ALFA, wifi amplifier
- bring your PPPT devices (pads,pods,phones, tablets)

Also not having enough time to drive out and back is no excuse for not attending, check into flying, renting a car, and staying at
the hotel!
John Sharpe and I ran the numbers and with a bit of careful flight selection, a discount car rental, and the GREAT discount GMCWS
got on the hotel room ($120 down to $85 per night) flying was cost effective from Houston!
Having said that the Pacific Northwest is a beautiful area to tour, the redwood and sequoia forests are really impressive!
