From my positive experience with a front mounted fuel filter/water separator I think the greatest benefit is fuel cooling. Certainly it is good to have an additional really large fuel filter as well, but with only one very brief vapor lock issue in 3400 really hot miles from sea level to nearly 5,000 feet something helped. Mine is mounted just outboard of the brake cylinder on the foot well. Fuel is pumped (or pushed) from the tank selector valve to this large filter and from there to the mechanical fuel pump and up to the carburetor. Rubber lines going to the filter and from the filter to the fuel pump. Steel line (insulated) from the fuel pump to the carb.

Emery,

It can be frustrating trying to get technical info when you can't order by year, make and model.? Good point about the ethanol/water absorption.? I bought a NAPA 4770 filter adapter to use the extra ports for a fuel temp sensor.? They couldn't answer the fuel compatibility question and finally wrote me up as a "problem incident".? Finding the right filter that fits on the adapter and in the allotted space has been tougher than I thought.

Thanks for your help,
JP

Jerry,

You noted:

"Fuel is pumped (or pushed) from the tank selector valve to this large filter and from there to the mechanical fuel pump and up to
the carburetor."

Did JimB install a little square Facet fuel pump between the selector valve and the tank that comes on when you switch to AUX?

This would explain why you didn't have any vapor lock problems to speak of. He installed one on Double Trouble and the only problem
I had was going up Eisenhower pass with low fuel in the AUX tank last summer. If I filled up in the mornings and hit the mountains
with a nearly full tank it worked great.

Regards,
Rob M.

George,

Here's a front mounted filter/separator installed by JimB.
http://gmccoop.com/Bob-fuel-filter-1.jpg    Can't quite make out the full model number.

I plan to use this one: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/fuel-supply/p50111-fuel-filter-amp-moun.html.  Per Emory's comments about ethanol absorbing any water in the fuel, it does not have a water separator.  Which works out well for me since I plan to fit the whole thing inside the frame rail.  The filter base is Napa 4770 from USAFilterstore.com.  Which I modified to fit.  A temp sensor can be easily installed in one of the unused ports.  The filter model can be cross-reference to all the major brand names.  Cost was about $22 + shipping.

I've been to Apple Vally a few times.  Have in-laws in Helendale.

JP

Jerry,
It seems that your experience with the large front mounted fuel filter is answering my question back in mid June about the effectiveness of a FUEL COOLER in solving the GMC vapor lock problem.

Several netters had THEORIES explaining why the cooler wouldn't help; but no one had actual experience with a cooler installed on the GMC.

I would think that an actual cooler in the airstream would be even more effective than your filter.

Thanks for documenting your experience.

Jerry, I've been running a fuel filter/water separator for about 9 years like what you describe and have said many times that it seems to cool the fuel. Mine is a Parker Hanifin.
