I’ve been installing the Manny reaction arm disc brake kit on the back of the coach with 80 mm calipers on the front and a P30 master cylinder. Attached is the rear alignment I did. I held a laser level on the individual rear hub faces to a target and measured to the frame to check bogie alignment. I also used a straight edge across both hubs and the laser level to check the total bogie alignment. There is so much spring in the bogie arms you have to go way past the alignment point to bend the arms. My question is what’s your opinion? Am I close enough or should I keep bending? I saved a table of the measurements in GMC photos. Thanks, Kirk

Kirk,

As well as you obviously understand the alignment and as carefully as
you've documented what you've done, I'm almost reluctant to say anything
except "Hoorah!". But, looking at your data, it appears to me that the "As
Left" toe measurements are the differences between your near- and
far-target distances from the frame. If that's true, your actual toe, as
commonly specified, is far less than shown. The manual's toe
specifications are based on measuring between the center lines of the tires
ON the tires themselves. That is, over a span of about 30", 15" forward of
the spindle and 15" aft of the spindle -- from side to side. If you
measure at a greater distance than that, you increase the accuracy of your
measurement, but the tolerance increases in direct relation to that
distance.

Example: For front toe, I like to use 60" beams on each front wheel. If I
were shooting for 1/8" toe out, I'd adjust to have the fronts of the beams
1/4" farther apart than the rears since the beams are twice as long as the
tires' diameters. If the beams were 120" long, I'd shoot for 1/2"
difference. You've posted the data to calculate what your actual toe
settings are, but I didn't bother to calculate them -- WAG is you're 4X
better than you state.

I suspect I've misread your data. Congratulations on the quality of your
work. Now, I hope you also installed the "True Tracks" so the center
settings will stay there. :-) (Manny tells me not many people are ordering
those -- a BIG mistake, IMHO.)

Thanks for the comment Ken, you confirmed my thinking on this. I'm close enough. Manny included his true tracks in the kit.

I had Chuck Alger true tracks on the front bogies that Chuck had removed from the rear bogies of his coach when he designed his version of the reaction arm brakes. They are now available.

Kirk,

Nice work - Did you happen to measure the camber as well?

Interesting that you found the fronts toe in and the rears toe out - Same as I fond mine! - I am curious as to what would cause that, considering they came off the assembly line "straight".

The camber was within 1/2* of 0* on all four prior to bending the bogies I'm not that concerned that it might have changed a little. I think the PO may have hit a curb on the passenger side. The drivers side as found wasn't off much; I guess it just settled in over time. Thanks, Kirk

What do you mean by "they are now available"? Do you have one for sale?
