How about this.
Make a pattern from the stock panel of the outside.
Then mark for the switches, heater A/C control, radio and the panel from CRATE A DASH.
I have also looked at the digital panel for the 1953/54 Chevy car or the duel gauges for the 1948/54 Chevy pickup.
You could use whatever material you happen to like.
I like the look of machined S S.
Take or send your pattern to a shop with water jet cutter.
I need spring/shock mounts for the 50 Chevy pickup when I up dated to stronger rear-end.
The cost to cut the 3/8 steel X 2 was $25.00

I hear you. Personally, I like the dual/quad gauge setup of the gps gauges. Keeps it simple, and does not modify for the sake of modification. You have room for two more gauges in between the speedo and quad guage, if you need to monitor more, without really disturbing the feng shui of the original dash..

However, for the price of all those gauges, you are in CIP territory.

I sure like what Ken H. did with his dash. We're I to go that far I would consider tossing the HVAC unit and installing a Vintage Air or similar with electronic controls and greater airflow.

I'll have to look that up.

There are a few folks who did a great job on their custom roll your own setups with conventional gauges. Kevin dietz is one:

I saw Ken's dash in person recently. I'm now waiting for retirement to
start that project. So much more room and Ken says he can take it all
apart to work on it. Heaven...

In the meantime I figured out a way to do something that made the stock
dash better and didn't take months to build.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g4935-new-dash-03-08.html

And there is room for more than two extra guages in the stock panel.
There were 4 of them when I bought it. I added a 5th and slung three
more under the dash.

I like analog gauges. If you clock them right you don't have to "read"
them... you just glance and notice the needles are all pointed up and
everything is fine. Most important for the Oil Pressure and Water Temp
on top...

I have sold two sets of panels and rounded up switched for those two.
There is a good RV Surplus store just down the road, although I haven't
been there since the RV business fell apart here. They may not have
the selection they once did.

We have one set of panels left. Those are Jerry's, I'm told. :^)

I can have more panels cut. As you can see there is a lot of messing
around to actually create the finished dash. Moving the speedo was a
bit of a chore itself - of course you could always use a different speedo...

It seems that almost every upgrade I do for my coach leave many chores
for the end user. That's probably because creating a finished,
sale-able product is a LOT more work than creating the few hard-to-build
parts.

being a life long "electronic-er" . let me tell you there is more to this
than :like".
- digital gauges have many failure modes
- require power ( which also fails)
- digital sensors are hard to test and easy to fail
- I want to read fewer gauges - not more
- gauge movement often tells ore than the reading

i love my digipanel (have them on all of my coaches:>)
but
last year I got panic call from a gmcer on top of a mountain
- his digipanel was flashing --error and sounding off
- it said the oil pressure was low
- the dash gauge said it was ok ---- what to do?---
- I said to trust the dash gauge,
- but watch the meter move
and
sure enough was a failure of the digital readout

so be careful what you wish for
