Or even scrap it.
Given the expense and effort and stress involved in getting the Royale up
and running well enough to make it to her new home, she despairs of having
to do the same with the Palm Beach.
"Dear, if I sell it, there's no way I can get more than a pittance for it
in its current condition."
"That's a chance I'm willing to take! Will a a scrapyard take it?"
"Sweetheart, I will GIVE the thing away before I put it in a scrapyard."
"I'm okay with that, too! We can take the empty space at the new storage
yard and park my now-empty boat trailer there, and put the Catalina back in
the garage where she belongs."
"Dear... I don't think 35 bucks a month to park a rattletrap old boat
trailer makes much sense."
"Oh, so you'll spend the money to store your run-down old RV, but not for
my boat trailer???"
She glared at me over our meal. I made a big show of taking a loooooong
drink while I tried to come up with some sort of counter-argument, I felt
like a young attorney in over his head who had just gotten snaked by one of
the old grey-hairs with a four-digit bar number (mine is six digits).
"Uh.... I got nothin'."
From an objective point of view, she's right. At this stage of my life, I
can't afford to restore TWO of these. I may not even be able to afford to
REPAIR two of these. ONE may be a problem. On the other hand, the various
parts are valuable (engine, tranny, glass, ACs, etc that make just storing
it for 35 bucks a month a no-brainer. Futhermore, once the effort to make
her sufficiently road-worthy to drive to the new place is done, that's a
HUGE part of the task accomplished right there; the rest is mostly
remodeling etc.
My concience won't let me sell her in an unsafe-to-drive condition.
Cost/benefit analysis:
I have four good tires and 3 bad rims for the Palm Beach (currently sitting
under the Palm Beach).
I have six aged-out tires on 6 good rims that came from the Royale,
currently sitting beside the Palm Beach.
Ergo, I need to remove six bad tires from the 6 good rims, but the 3 good
tires from the Palm Beach onto them, and buy two more good tires, for a
total of six good tires and rims. That will cost some money.
A battery is needed. That will cost some money.
A fuel cell is currently feeding the engine, sitting in the passenger seat.
5 gallon steel can. I suspect the fuel lines will need to be replaced with
the spendy space-age milspec stuff that Tom and I found.
The brakes need to be bled and serviced.
I bet that for around a thousand dollars, I can get her moving safely under
her own power.
I could put the Royale wheels with old tires on her for FREE, and get her
Landolled for 600 or so.
I could attempt to drive her with the Royale's old wheels/tires... they
brought me 150 miles home after all. It'd be pushing my luck though. I have
AAA, but they may invite me to leave if I abuse them (they're still upside
down with me from the first time I had the Barn Queen towed).
I'd appreciate thoughts from the Hive Mind. :)

uh.. I got nothing.
I have heard that there are some trucks that may still be using the 16.5 tires. you might call a couple of local trucking companies and find out if they have some. might get you rolling anyway.
I do agree that just getting her to move will be a large part of the restoration process.
How far to you have to drive? to make the move. It will be a gamble but if you have AAA then it is a lower risk then not having AAA. How old are the Royale tires?

It's 30 miles to the new place. The Royale tires are circa 1997 or so, but
they've got VERY little wear. I found the receipt when they were replaced
last, and the odometer hasn't ticked over very far (I have forgotten the
exact number, and just said "Note to self, tires have almost no miles, but
are old."

I just did a google search for used tires in Jackson ms and google returns over 26 hits. there is one listed as BK used tires and rims. over on Terry rd.
there is a chance that they might have a couple that will do. I am taking 6 eight year old tires off next week to replace with new, if the shipping would not kill you can have em. (at least I am on the same coast)

I have the six useable 16.5s I took off in lieu of the 16s I got from Applied. They've got a bit of time left. TransForce 16.5s, ~6 years old. Mounted with air. Figure a way to get them to Jackson from N Georgia, or figure a dropoff spot along !85-I65-I10 next Friday.

Johnny: Rims and tires? I really only need two more pieces of rubber to
have six NEW shoes. I think that's 240 bucks... although I don't know what
the tire place will charge me to swap around the tires off the three bad
junkyard rims onto good ones. Call it 20 bucks each, that's 60. 300 bucks
all up. Yours have 2 years left in 'em. If you're talking about bringing
rims with tires already on 'em, that saves a chunk in tire mounting fees,
and not having to buy any more outright.
Where on I10 you gonna be? Gas to get to you and back will almost certainly
be less than the cost of 2 new tires and swapping the new rubber off the
old tires. Wouldn't have to gamble on the 16 year old Royale tires.

Yeh, rims and tyres. Takeoffs from my 23'. I'll hit I10 in Mobile and head West, eventually to just E of San Antonio. Probably leave Atlanta around noon, which is 11A your time. I need to get to S Tejas Friday in the afternoon, so I'll go as far as I can Thursday evening. MapQuest says six hours to Biloxi, seven and a half to the I55 junction. So, 6:30P or so, someplace on I 10 close to I55. Le,mme see if there's a Motel 6 or other cheeeep joint in the area....

Well, Biloxi is just down the road for me down 49, and there's also 55
(although that gets into New Orleans). Where do you want to stop for the
night, and are we talking Friday night or Saturday night of next week? I
can probably convince the CFO to make it a Date Night. :)

Actually i GAVE the boat away. After I spent hours and hours sanding, I
started on pulling up the carpet... and half the deck came up with it,
revealing rotten decking beneath. I was able ot get through it with my bare
hands to the flotation foam beneath, which was waterlogged... probably from
rain and not necessarily for leaking in the water. But still.
I put the boat on CL because at that point it's a constructive loss. I'd
have to literally pop the fiberglass halves apart to replace the decking,
which would require drilling out umpty rivets in the rub rail, and
reglassing everytrhing... it was just more than I needed to get into on a
400 dollar boat that we only just got that didn't belong to a beloved
departed family member or anything. So we kept the trailer for our future
boat, going to try to pick up a cheap aluminum boat sans trailer.
A kid and his brother came and got the boat for use on the family farm's
pond. It's perfect for leaving out by the fishing hole upside down when
they're not using it.

That... that actually sounds like the kind of thing I could get behind. I
wonder if I could lease it to them in exchange for a royalty or fractional
share, sort of like an oil and gas lease.

Their web site has some info on it. The site says the owner gets fifty percent. Not sure how cleanup/patchup costs are split.

Dayam, that seems pretty attractive, actually. Can the coachees be
otherwise stored out there for the off season without incurring storage
costs? I'll have to get in touch with these folks. I've got two of these
things...

OK, I'm booked into the Motel 6 in Hammond LA next Thursday night, the 25th. It's about a block off I55, looks like 2010 Morrison road. If you want me to bring the wheels I will, let me know. It's on you to get there and get them. I ought to get there around 6:30P, might be later. Heading out crack of dawn Friday. Call me for time confirmation.

Well, Biloxi is just down the road
for me down 49, and there's also 55
(although that gets into New Orleans). Where do you want to
stop for the
night, and are we talking Friday night or Saturday night of
next week? I
can probably convince the CFO to make it a Date Night. :)
