Saw a thread about these awhile ago but can't find it now. Can someone help me find it? As I recall there was some modification needed to the rub strip to make them fit.

How I did it, Jay...

Old parts stripped off. Need to fill in some areas to make this all work.

Laser cut pieces with countersunk rivet holes and rivet-nuts. These
plates are riveted to the fiberglass panel.

Seem to remember that Rich Denney used them, too. I'll bet he mounted
them differently...

Kelvin,
Very nice indeed. Looks factory. Are those Piranha LED lights? I've been looking for some new side marker lights and haven't found too many I like. Do you have all four wired as turn signal lights?

Hello Jay. I just asked Kelvin about his lights and whether they were Piranhas. The Piranhas look pretty much identical and are the same exact size, but have 6 LEDs instead of 8 like the ones you posted.
http://www.vehiclesafetysupply.com/product/PET-187A.html

And yours are a lot cheaper. Thanks for posting the link.

Kelvin,
How much did the laser cut adapter plates cost? If you have a good source and would make more, I'm interested in a set of four.

If you're not interested in making more, could you send me the CAD file for the adapter plate? I think that'd be a great thing to post somewhere.

Excellent. Thanks Kelvin! Great Looking Coach!!
And like Richard, I'd be interested in 4 of the mounting plates if it's possible.

Cost for the parts is minimal. Thin, flat aluminum. Fuel and "time"
for the 40 mile round trip to the vendor is almost more of a
consideration. Eats up an hour+.

Would you want them ready to install as a kit (rivet nuts installed and
flathead 1/8" rivets provided) or just laser cut plates that you'll
finish up?

And the more the merrier. Anyone else interested? The parts get
cheaper the more I have made. At this point I can only guess at cost
for kit or simple plate. I'd like to make a few bucks but in the spirit
of GMC ownership I'll be very fair.

The front ones are wired as turn signals. Harder to get at the wires in
the back to make that work but they're right next to the turn signals
anyway, so not as important.

Those light do stick out a lot further than stock. I considered that
fact when I chose them. They're very bright and way more obvious than
the OEM solution. Very functional as marker lights and auxiliary turn
signals.

I didn't do them nearly as neatly as you did. I installed a 2-1/2x1/8"
aluminum flat bar in place of the original sheet metal rub-strip
holder, which was a mess. I installed the lights on that aluminum flat
bar using rubber well nuts. I also fashioned gaskets for the perimeter
of the light using foam weatherseal tape, just to keep water from
entering the the coach through the marker light area. And I secured
the lights using rubber well nuts.

One aspect of this project that I'm sure was already discussed is that
the system flows current in two directions through the front marker
lights, depending on what is being display (turn signal or running
lights). I used a bridge rectifier mounted inside the coach to turn
the current around. Those LEDs are diodes after all, and only work
with current flowing in the correct direction.

Finding LEDs with integral reflectors wasn't so easy.

Rick,

WELCOME BACK!

I was thinking about you the other day because you hadn't been here in SOOOOO long! Thought something untoward might have happened
to you but since you're a "youngster" compared to most of the rest of us I dismissed that thought.

Regards,
Rob M.

Sequester doesn't affect us directly--the Highway Trust Fund is off-budget.

But it does affect us indirectly--I call it sympathy pain. But we are
restricted more because of the stupid GSA and IRS junket conferences
than by the sequester. We are under severe limitations when we travel,
too. For example, at the major annual research conference in our
industry, I was not allowed to attend the reception hosted by my alma
mater.

The beat goes on, however. Too much travel, but I accomplish little
sitting in a Baltimore cubicle compared to what I can accomplish
working directly with state and local agencies. So, I put up with it.

It has hammered weekends, which are filled with deferred chores. I'm
still cleaning up treefall from Sandy--not much time for the GMC. But
I used it in June, and it worked.

By the way, I've been reading your blog. Deeply. Envious. (By the way,
Hwy 1 in California is California Hwy 1, the Pacific Coast Highway,
not US-1, which runs along the East Coast--US highways count up from
the east and north; Interstates count up from the west and south.)

And what the heck is all that fresh paint on Kelvin's coach? That is
giving me a severe inferiority complex.

Something untoward did happen to me. I tried to become a lazy,
good-for-nothing federal employee like I keep reading about. But I
can't seem to find where I'm supposed to sign up for that gig. I've
never worked harder (at least not while at work).

Rick,

Hmmmmmm so the West Coast boys didn't like the idea that US-1 was on the East Coast eh? ;-)

The Aussies were smarter! Their Highway 1 is a ring road around the WHOLE country!

Given that nobody lives in the middle, it makes sense that the main highway
would follow the coast all the way around.

The US Highway numbering scheme was first worked out by the American
Association of State Highway Officials in 1926. The Interstate system was
designed to go the opposite way to avoid confusion.

The U.S. numbered route on the West Coast is mostly U.S. 101, and it runs
usually a bit inland to find the straighter line further south. In
California, the road that runs right along the water is usually called the
PCH--the Pacific Coast Highway (California Highway 1). Gorgeous drive, too,
and in places will test the GMC. US-101 follows the coast more closely in
Oregon. Pacific City, which is the home of Haystack Rock that Ken
photographed in his blog, is a really amazing place, with a lovely (but
expensive) RV park across the street from the beach. The Redhead and I did
that part of the Oregon coast in an VW Vanagon Camper, a few months before
we bought the GMC.
