My onan has a FACET Automotive Electric Fuel Pump Model #40131. I need to replace it with another one. I see the new ones range from $100 and up. Are there less expensive pumps that will work and/or does anyone have a used pump I can get at a resonable price?

Hi, Tom. Here's a discussion from March regarding replacements for the Onan fuel pump:

http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&goto=202812&rid=1829

If you want to keep the Onan as stock as possible, stick with the Facet pump. The discussion has several links to vendors who sell it. There's also some references to the Mr. Gasket pump. I don't have any experience with it, but others have had success. It's usually available at local auto parts stores, and JimK sells it as well: http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/933

An Amazon search for "Facet 12V fuel pump" comes up with many usable pumps around $50-$60.

Forgot to mention: make sure that any pump that you buy has no more than 4 PSI output.

obviously Jim K has the pump.

the mr gasket 42s is one of the correct fuel pump for the onan. has the lesser 2-3.5 psi.

I believe you want the less pressure one for the onan, per what I have in my notes from Jim Bounds.

http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Gasket-42S-Electric-Fuel/dp/B000BWE4RC/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1374242813&sr=8-11&keywords=electric+fuel+pump

not an exact replacement for original, but it works, and is not hard to bolt up almost exactly.

I measured the output pressure from an original cylindrical facet pump - 4 psi against a dead head, 3.5 psi with engine running.

I've had trouble with those Mr. Gasket pumps; the usual failure is that the device runs but won't pump. Sometimes a sharp whack with a screwdriver handle will make it start pumping, sometimes not. YMMV of course!

Thanks for all the info. Another question is when I suck on the fuel line there is gas in it. When I put a hose on the pump into a jar of gas and then put a hot wire to the pump, the pump pumps the gas into the pump and into the carb. I then reconnect the coach fuel line to the pump and the generator then runs fine until I think it uses the gas up in the pump. It seems just not to suck the gas from the coach but will from the gas jar. Is it possible for the pump just not to suck hard enough? I took the pump apart and cleaned it but no luck.

I would more lean towards a messed up, crushed or damaged fuel line if that was the case.

take a 2 gallon can. set it up on a cinder block about 5 feet away from the coach. see if the onan will run for a while.

or just to make sure of a simple fix. You need to have a 1/2 tank of gas to properly test the onan. onan will not suck gas from coach from about a 1/4 tank or less.

You might want to check the seat in the carb. Mine exhibited similar behavior to what you describe: the pump could move huge amounts of fuel into a jar but when connected to the carb the bowl would run dry almost immediately.

We discovered a little piece of the seat had become torn (but was still attached) and been pushed up above the seat by the needle. When this happened the hole through the seat became almost completely blocked.

Check for a crack or loose fitting on the line from the tank to the pump.

That is not uncommon with those pumps if the input side to them has been open. When you open the input side, all of the gas in the line runs back down to the tank. After that, when you start the pump again it has to suck all of the air out of the line before it can get to gasoline again.

A little positive pressure in the tank as you are hooking up the line or when the pump is running will get the air out and the pump will run fine after that. I usually use an air hose and a rag and apply a little pressure to the gas filler. It does not take much pressure to force the gas back up the line again.

DO NOT BLOW UP THE TANK by using too much air pressure.

SUCCESS! Thanks everyone for all your comments. My problem was the most simple one. NOT ENOUGH GAS IN THE TANKS. What I learned from this is to "TRUST ALL OF YOU." I figured since I could suck gas out of the fuel line (nasty taste) there must be enough gas in the tanks and the most simple fix could not be right (WRONG). After purchasing the pump made by Gasket Model 42S, the first one I got did not pump so I had to go back to the store and return it and get another one from a different store in a different city. This one worked in that it would suck gas from the jar but not from the fuel line, my original pump does that. So now I'm thinking maybe there is not enough gas in the tanks, so I run to the gas station and fill it up to the 3/4 full mark. I go home and rehook up the new pump and guess what, it sucks and pumps gas. So now I think maybe the old pump may work so I put it back on the generator and test it, wow pumps gas. I now put everything back together as it was in the beginning and I now have a spare pump for the onan. If I would only have listened to you all and just went to the gas station I would have saved a days work, lots of sweat and frustration, and would have saved $47. My onan just purrs now. Moral of the story, LISTEN TO YOUR FELLOW GMC'ERS, START WITH THE SIMPLE FIX FIRST AND THEN MOVE ON, THEY KNOW BEST.

What is wrong with it.
Sometimes they get gunked up by fuel sitting in it for a long time.
You should try to run the ONAN at least once per month year around.

Try dissembling it and cleaning it with carb cleaner and then testing it. It might run.
