That's not true.
I had a fiberglass bodied Travco several years before the GMC was invented. I believe Bob Frank in Michigan was really a leader and some parts of the GMC motorhome resemble his work.

Emery,
Two things:
1) A Travco (Dodge) was the first motorhome I traveled in as a kid. I like them, but I tell people that the Travco was the East German version of a GMC. It has appeal, but it's just not sexy.
2) Highly honed selective memory can be a useful life skill. Usually.

The first "motorhome" was built by Ray Frank. Of course there had been "housecars" "camp cars" "motor caravans", etc almost as long as there have been cars, but nobody before Frank used the word "motorhome", so he gets the credit. Frank went into series production in 1958, partnered with Dodge in 1961, and came out with the sleek fiberglass-bodied motorhome that would later be known as the Travco in 1963.
According to figures posted on this list by Bill Bryant, over 260,000 motorhomes were shipped in the eight years before the GMC hit the market (1965-1972).

Thank you, Owen.
I had incorrectly said Bob Frank in an earlier message.
It is Ray. I had met him in Brown City, Michigan more than once. It wasn't very far from where i lived in Midland.
When he sold Frank Industries to buyers that formed Travco , he went on to found Xplorer Motorhomes. I purchased one of their earlier models which was the use of a Dodge van with a lowered floor to allow over 6 foot of headroom inside but stiil allowing it to be stored in a normal house garage. That was before I bought a 27 ft. Travco.

My mom and dad's first and only motorhome was a '73 Travco 270 bought about 1980. I loved that thing even though it looked better coming than going. I seem to remember the 413 Dodge motor and fiberglass and steel-hoop construction was envied by others in the caravan trips we took all over the western US. We spent a lot of time looking at GMC's in the parks and saying "now that's a motorhome", but owning one was out of question - way too spendy. Hence the '76 Eleganza in my garage now!

Steve, This used EARTHROAMER was in Sanford, FL. They are bigger on the inside than they look on the outside. Crew cab was very roomy and the rear RV shell is one piece (no seams to leak). Well thought out.
For one to hit the repo market all you have to do is miss a few payments.
