My wife and i have been searching for our new gmc and have come across this unit in Louisville
Not sure if the link is working so i here is the URL
http://www.gmcmotorhomesforsale.com/forsale/KY/louisville/3660683975/
for our purposes of shipping to Australia the rear opening hatch means we wont have to relocate the door
we will have to build a bed shower toilet and table but we think a new interior will be easier than dealing with exterior mods.
does anybody know this vehicle and have an opinion
thanks

Trevor,
It appears to be a good deal. If you plan on doing the interior to your own taste then I would try and have someone in the area look. JR Slaten lives in Looaville, that how he pronounces it. He doesn't follow the net very often. He can be reached at jrslaten@aol.com. His phone is five 0 two-8 three six-two 0 nine 7. He should be able to help you out.

I didn't see any reference to a topside access. The escape route out the back is neat, though!

Perhaps the rear hatch will allow licensing the coach in Australia, but it won't really be much of a virtue when/if the coach is converted back to a "liveable coach" (unless you want a full-size hatch as part of your bedroom - along with the leaks that would likely come with it). And even if you re-seal the rear hatch, you will be entering/exiting the coach from the wrong (street) side from then on.
To me, it seems that it would be preferable to find a more liveable coach in great mechanical condition as a starting point, unless you plan to gut anything you buy and start over (intriguing, but costly). A lot of the value with the Louisville coach is in the toy hauler conversion, which (correct me if I'm wrong) will actually be a detriment to rebuilding this coach up to its final configuration.
Not to mention Louisville isn't too close to any shipping point...

It is odd that the topside access wasn't mentioned, but Mickey picked up on it. I had to go back and look. The roof deck railing opening is at the front, and there's a ladder visible through the window going up through the enlarged AC framed opening.

Oh, EVERYBODY has an opinion,
That is a very cool coach for its intended purpose but you gotta' really love diamond plate.
Will you make an extended trip to the States for your final purchase?
Do i understand correctly that the entrance door has to be on the left? Do you have to convert to right hand drive also?
If i were in your situation i would start with Jim K in California or Jim B in Florida and get a price for the door conversion and get one of them to help help you find a coach in their area.
The door conversion might not be so bad if you can leave the existing and get a donor for the other side, which either of the jims is likely to have.

Dave,
FYI modifications to vehicles in Australia must be reviewed and meet AUSTRALIAN regulations.
Converting to RHD in New South Wales must be overseen by an engineer with a degree in automotive engineering that holds a "ticket"
to approve said modification.
If you add a second door you loose approximately 24 inches of wall / floor space which is at a premium in a GMC.
Regards,
Rob

not sure if I would want to travel accross the US without a bathroom. one of the best parts of having a motorhome is to have your own bathroom when you are needed, and the family needs it.
I would think the cost of installing a bathroom, would be equal to moving or adding a door?

Rob,
What would happen if you had the modifications done here in the US (by Jim Bounds, maybe) and THEN shipped it to Australia? Would it still need to be certified by an engineer?
That might be an easier way to do it.

The rear door may not cut it, NevilleC out in WA added a door there but someone else wanted to do that and the authorities in that
state said it was too far from the driver seat.
According to QLD transport question 7 is
Does the vehicle have an outward facing or sliding door on the left hand side of the vehicle?
Note The door must allow a normal size person to easily enter or exit the living cabin of the vehicle without use of external fixtures and must be free of impediments
Here is a link
we will either get it registered first and then do the interior or place a beed each side in the rear and leave between them free to exit in an emergency .
we dont plan on using this door at all it is just to satisfy the rego requirements

from my discussions with an engineer
he will charge around $2000 due to the age of the vehicle i can carry out the work my self but i need to document and he needs to see the conversion at various stages.
If i get the GVM reduced to 4500 KG i only need a car licence to drive this and then as the vehicle is over 30 years old it classifies as a special interest vehicle therefore i can leave it LHD
if the work was carreied out overseas if there were photos taken and documentation to back up the photos we will be able to get it engineered.

we will have about a month of holiday when we fly over to pick up
we have found a cheap flights Brisbane to FIJI 4 hours stay a few days
Fiji to LA 8 hours
LA to St Louis or Dallas
rent a car have a look around take a 3-5 days to get to Louisville
then go for a drive
drop off at a port either new york
or LA we don't care where we go
Fly home Direct 13 hours
we are flexible with our travel destinations it will all depend on where we purchase a vehicle

I wonder how much that coach weighs? They pulled a bunch of stuff out, but they added a lot, too. You might be ripping off a lot of the expensive and best features of that already-once-converted coach to modify it to conform to Australian regulations, and to get it down under the weight limit you mentioned.
Considering that the rear hatch and skydeck do nothing to aid in that conversion - the main issue is the left hand door, right? - wouldn't a more stock GMC with all of the conveniences already in place be an easier and cheaper modification? Then it's "just" swapping the dinette/bed and door.
I guess what I'm asking is whether there are other reasons that that coach does it for you. Why choose that one over a more standard and fully stocked coach?
