IF everything is working as designed, that switch has two functions.
1. it switches the tank selector valve so that gas is drawn out of either the main (rear) tank or the auxiliary (front) tank.
2. it switches between the two sending units on the different tanks.
The tanks are somewhat different that a normal dual tank system as they are tied together by the filler tube at the center of the tanks (up and down) they tend to equalize levels until the fuel level gets below the fill inlet, then fuel is drawn from whichever tank is selected. The idea is that you will have a reserve in the front tank of about eight gallons, after the rear tank is run dry.
There is an illustration somewhere of how this all works. I'll try to find it.

That is for your two gas tanks. Main tank positions allows you to use
approximately 40 gals with a reserve tank (auxiliary tank) of about 10
gals. You should also get a Tell-Tale indicator that reads "Low Fuel" when
you get to the last ten gallons.
