I put a light on the clutch for my AC compressor, cause I like to know what things are doing Smile

So I ran it for the first time on a moderately hot day, like 85 degrees for a good 30-50 minutes. I was driving 40-50 mph most of the time.

I never once saw the compressor cycle off.

Does this indicate a bad, or weak compressor?
I have a trip coming up in 3 weeks and I want cold air dang it!

Check the freon charge. I believe there is a low pressure cutoff that prevents the clutch from cycling.

Many compressors never cycle depending on the duty cycle and the load on the system. Sometimes more info is a detriment for those who need to know Smile I suspect that many GMC motorhome A/C units never cycle.

Hard to beleve it wouldn't cycle, seems thats an indication it never reached full pressure...

Cycling clutch compressor started in 77 for GM. It will only cycle on cooler days on a low fan setting to prevent freeze up. At 85 you probably had blower on 3 or Hi. Wouldn't cycle in that case. If earlier build coach it never cycles. Valving controls evap temp. If you have R12 you can check for a clear (Liquid) site glass with it running. Not valid test with HC12. I doubt the compressor is 'weak', they usually get replaced due to noise.

If it is the 75 GMC you are talking about that is pre GM CCC and it should stay engaged, no cycling.

Yes it is the 75 GMC, not cycling is completely counter intuitive, I guess I have something new to learn!

Thanks!

73 and 74s MIGHT cycle. They have a temperature switch that senses the evaporator temperature and shuts the compressor off if the temp gets low enough for the evaporator to ice up. I don't know about later years. Per the 73 Maintenance Manual:

A thermostatic switch, located in the blower-evaporator case, acts to control compressor operation by sensing the fin temperature of the evaporator core.

If the freon is at the right pressure and you get cold air (55dg at vent) then I would say you good.

If pressure is good, but get little cooling then you have moisture in the line and it is freezing in the Expansion Value, that will cause the the Compressor to keep running.
