Finally got my steering linkage all back in and went to start the unit to move it. The Alternator light dimmed then stayed on. The house batteries I know are shot and on my list to replace but one thing at a time. Still not done with the front end. The alternator was new a year ago. And the unit was driven back from TX last year. Any ideas on what to check before I blow another new one. Also any size or brand suggestions. Thanks guys and gals.

Robert,

The dead house batteries could be doing that if the alternator wiring has not been modified (like by installing an alternator protection cable). It is because the alternator output is such a high current that the line drop to the system is enough to make the indicator lamp glow visibly.

Try disconnecting the house bank. If you want to replace the house bank, think about a pair of golf cart 6V in series.

Matt

A meter is your friend here to see what the voltages are at different points. The only thing I can think of failing from sitting is a stuck brush. A battery with shôrted cells (as Matt steered you) can place a lower than normal impedance in the circuit. One shorted cell and you have a 10v battery and you are trying to jam 14 volts into it. Heavy load on alt.

These alternators were designed to recharge cranking batteries. In our coaches, they are asked to charge both the cranking battery as well as depleted coach batteries. This results in high temperatures and a duty cycle they were not designed to live up to. There are several solutions but many of us are OK with lifetime warranties from such places as Autozone.
