OK, I have my air compressor for a total outlay of $50 for a Craigslist 1HP motor.  Free rebuilt two stager, free 65 gallon tank.  I can't afford Chicago Pneumatic stuff, and I will use tools maybe three times a year... where do I look for cheeeep air tools?  Need impact wrench, grinder/cutter, sander, etc.

Johnny,
Chicago Pneumatic are cheap air tools along with Harbor Freight. They are about the lowest prices that you will find. If you are a limited user then do as Bruce points out. But it is really buyer beware on those types of air tools.

Harbor Freight is really inexpensive as compared to Snap On and other major brands.
Here are some cheap tools.
http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-inch-pneumatic-impact-wrench-95310.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/3-8-eighth-inch-impact-wrench-93296.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/3-8-eighth-inch-professional-air-ratchet-47214.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-inch-air-ratchet-wrench-35227.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/4-inch-air-angle-grinder-95504.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/1-4-quarter-inch-inline-die-grinder-kit-53177.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/5-high-speed-air-sander-68739.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/6-in-dual-action-air-sander-68152.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/jitterbug-orbital-air-sander-90115.html
It is Flat Rate shipping, you can't drive to the store for that price. Which means that standard ground shipping is $6.99 unless you buy something that has extra shipping charges, that's your entire order.

Unless you're a professional Mechanic then these tools work well for most. I have always gotten the few dollars that I have spent on these tools back. If they break, I go get another one and they do have short term warrantees. If you don't like HF tools thats OK but for some that are limited users the price is right!

don't go cheap on an impact wrench. you need a good impact wrench or they are worthless.

Save your pennies and get a good ingersol rand, the one witht he round selector on the back is awesome. It will take any nut off. Even rusted, siezed ones, even the front axle nut with the cotter pin in Smile

If you can get one cheap at a garage sale or CL or something, go for it. But it's the reason to have compressed air!

as far as grinders, cutter and sanders, I'd get electric ones not air. your compressor is too small to run em.

Electric ones are way better as you don't have to wait for the compressor to recover...

I bought a Chicago Electric "double-cut" 5" circular saw

at Harbor Freight a few days back and with a few of the

little multi-LED trouble lights that brought the total up

over $50, I got a Central Pneumatic 3" High Speed Air

cutter free!

That's a switch.  When I was a kid at the local factory summers (60s) CP made top of the line air tools.   I'll have a look.  I'm with you, things get used three times a year if that.  Cheep from the Heathen Chinee will work fine.

Thanks yall!

Congrats on a good air compressor. At least I hope it is good, two stage makes it better than most. One HP is a little low for working air tools hard. You will have to be patient on some occasions. CCV (Cheap Chinese Version) tools look a lot like CP and Ingersol but they use twice the air to do about three quarters the work. So, for something like GMC lugnuts, just buy the bigger impact and be ready to wait a while.

Good advice. I started out with cheap air tools from Costco. The didn't have sufficient power and they didn't last. I have since upgraded to Craftsman air tools and even they are a compromise. I am always envious of the top quality name brand air tools my mechanic friend uses in his shop. He would probably toss my Craftsman tools in the trash. Like any other power tool, buy the best you can afford and live with the consequences when you don't.

I work with air tools every day and learned this lesson a long time ago. Cheap air tools are false economy. There is absolutely NO comparison between my CP impact wrench and the equivalent CENTRAL Pneumatic (HF).

I THINK JR meant that CENTRAL Pneumatic was a cheap air tool. CHICAGO Pneumatic (widely known as CP)still makes good stuff.

Yes, I've got some Chinese junk air tools and use them for specialty tools, like using a HF drill for spinning a TIG tungsten while being sharpening on a belt sander. Certainly won't spin a drill bit enough to drill a hole... Shocked

Seriously, I use my off brand impact wrench when I want to be sure things don't get overtightened...seriously. You can spin down head bolts etc without concern that you will over torque anything. Air ratchets are the same way.

One thing to consider if you have limited air as you have is how long your air will last. You can sit and let the cheap tool pound until all your air is gone and your compressor is running flat out at about 50 psi or you can go BAAAP for a second on a good impact and have it off.

Hi Johnny: I have a 1" air impact that I use on the big trucks and it requires a 1/2" air line from the compressor. I found that the 1/2 drive air tools work better initally with the bigger air line to break loose big bolts. IMO a good investment. I also would advise a ratty looking old IR air gun over any new residential grade.

Bewarw that some of the air tools do not need to bo oiled daily, if at all. The plastic parts inside may disolve with oil on them.

Yeh, it's a Quincy Compressor 820 - was just rebuilt and never installed when WSB tore down their studio building and built another.  It was the building HVAC air supplier (all pneumatic controls).  I got it new on the shipping pallet.  Since it's a 1HP, I put a 2 1/2 inch pulley on the motor.  It ain't gonna be fast, but a 65 gal tank at 140 PSI will take a wheel off.

Johnny
Congrats on a good air compressor.  At least I hope it is good, two stage makes it better than most.  One HP is a little low for working air tools hard.  You will have to be patient on some occasions.  CCV (Cheap Chinese Version) tools look a lot like CP and Ingersol but they use twice the air to do about three quarters the work.  So, for something like GMC lugnuts, just buy the bigger impact and be ready to wait a while.

Johnny,

Go to the Harbor Freight website and search for "ELECTRIC IMPACT WRENCH." Four will pop up 2ea 110 VAC and 2ea 18 VDC. I carry the
110 VDC model in Double Trouble. I bought it on Ken H's recommendation.

It is currently on sale for $49.99 but I bought mine on sale for $39.99.

Regards,
Rob M.

Mickey,

Just carry a 4 foot cheater pipe and a breaker bar. Less damage to the nuts, much cheaper, and more reliable,
