I am in the process of improving the cooling in both of our coaches. The Royale because I no longer want to use the engine oil cooler in the aluminum radiator (don't trust it after the three failed engines in a row), the Clasco because I don't think the stock radiator is as efficient as it could/should be for where we live (it is hot in the summer time and we have to climb mean grades of 1000 to 3000 feet no matter which way we go. In both cases I want to improve the transmission oil cooling as well.

I removed the front fender liners from the Royale years ago and saw an immediate improvement in cooling with no ill effects from water splash, so likely will do that on the Clasco as well. The Royale is a 78 so has the air deflectors stock and I already added them to the Clasco. Both have lower rock shields for the radiator.

So, here are my questions from the collective brain trust:

1) should I use active (fan assisted) or passive external oil coolers?

2) should they be placed near the radiator where the heat will be directed into the radiator or away so the heat is directed away from the radiator?

3) if near the radiator, should they be in front of the AC condenser or below it?

4) Looking at the back of the radiator the lower hose is quite a ways above the bottom of the core so it seems the lower part of the radiator would do far less heat exchanging than the top. Is that really the case?

5) any other steps you would recommend?

Jerry, I like you mentioning no inner fenders. I have no cooling issues but it will make tinkering a lot easier if I just leave them off. I know Ken Burton runs without his.
Same issue with alum radiator cooler after blowing 2 engines. I have it blocked and am using an external cooler. I have both of my coolers mounted on the passenger side, behind the grille. Tried to keep them out of the front of the a/c and radiator as much as possible. I can send pictures if you want.

Bill Bryant has been a long-time advocate of multiple perforations in the front wheel well liners for two reasons, cooling and for access for the pointy end of a fire extinguisher should the need arise. It's hard to argue either point.

I don't know that entirely removing the liner improves the perforated solution, and would most likely just toss more stuff up where you don't need it.

Jerry,
From an engineering stand point, there is only one proper cooling coil to
use as the cooling capacity is 3 times greater than the straight fin with
tube running through.
BM Hydro has that type of design.
We put the Old style as an oil cooler and I can see that it was not working
very well as oil temp went up more at high speed verses the new style that
has the oil traveling through flat wafered surface.
I have always run the new style since 1992.
Jerry, there are several models with different fittings and sizes.
If you go to their site, they should give you the information you need.
As for location; I suggest mounting below the condenser and about no more
than one inch away from the radiator.
Should you
use a unit with a fan,it is always more desirable to have the fan behind
the coil so the air can reach the coil with less dead spots from the blades.
There will be times when one needs to violate these as there are space
limitation.
