My understanding is
You can upgrade the cooling and charging systems.
There is a guy in Kansas Antique Auto something who in the upgrade business
for the folks who run in this race.
I have read some of his articles on cooling.
Its all about small and large bubbles in the cooling fluid.

There was a 1935 Stout Scarab that ran a couple of years ago. They were
powered by 1935 Ford V8s. The pictures showed an 8BA engine. If you
know flatheads, that is 1949-1953. So they're not real strict.

239.4 Cu. In. displacement and rated at 100 BHP if I recall in my 1950 Sportsman Green convertible w/ overdrive tranny that was my 2nd car. The Mercs of that day had 255.1 Cu. In. displacement I think.

That would be the flathead with the upright distributor, as opposed to the 'beehive' on the front of the engine, would it not?

Yes, although that's not an unusual change. Fords of the thirties were not
very durable. Fortunately, Ford had a very
good rebuilt engine exchange program. And Bill Stout was an airplane
designer and manufacturer. So he replaced
things on a regular. basis. I have a copy of the service records on no. 2,
which provided the running gear for no. 9.
I do seem to get deep into these things. it seems.
