Greetings,
How often should the front wheel bearings be re-packed. I know they need to be removed with a bearing press.
Thanks

Speaking of greasing the wheel bearings, can someone post the link to the photos of the knuckle mod for greasing w/o tear down ? Getting ready to assemble the knuckles and would like to port them for zerks.

I just bought a coach that has been sitting for 7-9 years - the front bearings were done by a shop not too long before sitting. Maybe only 1000 miles. Obviously re-doing them would grant piece of mind, but should they be OK in theory?

When I bought my coach, that had been in unknown condition, I wanted it to roll and stop safely. I had Tom Hampton service all bearings and brakes, and install his SS brake lines.
Then he worked on the "Go".
I would service the bearings.

When we first bought our coach, one of the few mechanical things the PO had done to it had been to replace the front bearings. He had done this with the help of an experienced GMCer in Texas within the past 5 or 6 thousand miles.
Much to my dismay. While checking the front end, I noticed an excessive amount of in and out movement at the top and bottom of the right front tire. After discussing this with Steve Ferguson, I decided to disassemble the hub/knuckle assembly and send them to Dave Lenzi for a rebuild. Dave told me that often the hub is okay bot most likely the knuckle will have to be replaced. Both of my hubs and both knuckles turned out to be out of spec and had to be replaced. To top it off, unbeknownst to PO and friend, the wrong seal was used and the inner lip of the seal was rubbing on the bearing, introducing metal shavings into the bearing grease.
Dave later told me, at the GMCMI in Pueblo, I would not have been likely to make it another thousand miles on those bearings. With Steve's help, I rebuilt the control arms as well and reassembled the whole nine yards and now have the peace of mind that it was done and done right.
Moral of the story is; don't take a chance on critical systems like wheel bearings. Either have them done properly by one of our experienced vendors, or upgrade to the one-ton.
