I thougth I'd restart my AC question as it has taken a new turn.

At the beginning I bought the low pressure R134 adaptor gizmo and screwed it onto the first place i found where it would fit- guess what, that was the high pressure side.

I would have though they'd use differnt size fitting but i guess they only expected real mechanincs to work on it.

In any case, my experience of it pressurizing very quickly and still not working is irrelelvant.

I'm going to try again on the correct port and see what happens.

But i did manage to squeeze a good bit of duracool into the system so what happens? Will it eventually find it's way around?

Dave,
Low and High side have the same size service ports on the R12 systems. It's a little more sophisticated than this, but basically, large diameter line is low side and small diameter line is high side. The stuff you got in will distribute through the system. Both sides should slowly equalize pressure when the compressor isn't running. The compressor and the expansion valve (or orifice tube on newer systems) serve as the dividers between low and high pressures. Hopefully, you weren't running the compressor while the can was hooked to the high side - bad things can happen that way.

I guess I should ask then, which is the low port on our GMC's...my guess is the hardest one to get to....

IT WORKS!!

Armed with new information about where to put the refrigerant, i managed to squeeze out the last few drops and got the pressure to around 25 PSI. At idle i get tolerably cool air. Pretty sure some more DC will make it right.

Life is good.

You don't necessarily need more. In fact, you might have too much.

With your air conditioner on high and the engine at 1500 rpm check the pressure on the low sisde fitting. I have found that at an ambient temperature of around 80 degrees that 20 psi is fine. More than that might make it run too warm.

If you ambient temperature is higher than 80 when you are checking it then the pressure will be a little higher.

Duracool acts differently than most refrigerants. It turns out that a lesser amount will run colder. The only problem is that if you have too low a charge the moisture in the air will freeze on your evaporator coils and block the air flow.
