It would be very helpful if someone would do a video of Manny R&Ring a transmission. Would take a lot of the fear of doing it yourself.

I have worked with Manny on 1 ton installations and other jobs. A camera
man would be in great peril trying to follow his activities. I have been
working on this stuff for a long time, and have never seen anyone like him.
The best thing to do is stay out of his way, shut up and watch and learn.
He is a master craftsman and the fastest mechanic that I have ever seen.
And I have trained hundreds of them.

I'd say "Amen" to Hupy's comments; I stayed at Manny's home for a couple of days and "we" did three tx. (One was mine) From disassembly to hot chemical bath to whatever; I mostly just stayed out of his way and cleaned up the floor, lathe and whatever. He is a fast-working marvel.

It sounds like if you filmed Manny it would just come out blurry ;)

All,
Actually I am pretty serious here! Manny is the Man that knows the in's and out's of R&Ring a transmission. A disk showing how he does it similar to Ken Thoma's CD on how to rebuild the front bearings. Seeing how it is done can help a fellow GMC'er do it him or her self. We need to pass this knowledge on so others can work on there coaches in the future.

John,

I don't disagree at all about Manny's skill and the value of preserving
it. BUT, what very few people realize is that it's practically impossible
for ANYONE to do as good a rebuild as he does. He doesn't publicize the
fact that he's essentially cornered the market on many essential parts --
he simply bought all the remaining inventory when they went out of
production. Others became unavailable so he's had them reproduced (NO, NOT
in China). For example, most, if not all, of the springs he replaces are
newly manufactured -- just for Manny. No overhaul kit I've seen includes
ANY springs.

And that doesn't even touch on his unique modifications; few have the
machining equipment, knowledge, or skills to do those. Some may be able to
build a reliable 425, but no one else is going to build a Manny Tranny. I
should have made a panoramic photo of the inventory shelves lining his
shop; everyone would be astounded.

Very few of us, including me, have realized just how very dedicated Manny
is to the GMC community, and how much he gives of himself -- for, IMHO, far
too little financial remuneration -- by personal choice. He's a "GMC
Saint" in greasy work clothes.

the man of steel, super man that is what Jim K call manny.

When i bought my gmc and the trans was out in san diego,

i was stuck. how am i going to get this up to anaheim? 100 miles.

when i talked with him he said, i will be there in a few days and

give you a new one and and put it in - in the front yard of the place i bought it.

actually the drive way. He drove from his north home about 10 hours to do it.

It saved me a lot of trouble and worry

I had only 10 minutes with he and his family to pay as he drove through the disneyland area.

i have never seen him since. Who was that mask man with the red cape.

Respect, total respect. This is hard to find in the business of mechanical services.

when you find a person like this it is royal and a treasure to all of us.

He is a hero that all the others in this service industry should try and be like.

Manny your the best. Thank you, i want to get a new front end next. please.

thanks for your inventions as well.

Mickey :-)

If we were to film him R&R a trans, everyone will feel that they can do it
as easily as he does it effortlessly and makes it look too simple.
Like a fine race horse, we need to be careful not to run him in too many
races.
As Ken H mentioned, his overhaul kit has twice as much new parts as any.I
hate to figure out how many dollars are tied up on trans . parts there.

Guys,
Were missing the point here!
How does he remove and replace and transmission, that is all! It is not how he builds a tranny or all the great parts that he uses or where he gets them from. Manny is a great resource for the GMC community that does quality work and goes out of his way to help when needed without being asked. People just need to see how it is done by the best! What are the little tricks and tools setups that could be used by the GMC owner that does the work himself?

When my OEM tranny went out in 2003 I was not a menber of this group. I saw an ad in a previuos (out of production) GMC magazine for Danny Dunn transmissions. So I got one. It works but I sure wish that I'd gone with one of Manny's transmissions.

Susie and I could not agree more with all of your good comments about Manny.
We arrived at the bottom of Manny's hill!
There is Manny waiting for us.
His instructions me put it in low and stand on the throttle do not let up make a hard left at the top.
Manny how did you like the trip up the hill.
Me not a problem.
Manny half the people can't stand the run up his hill.
One more thing I had called Manny before driving up asking for his address.
Why?
Me I'm renting a car.
No need you can use one of ours.
Manny we are going to see my sister in Marshall about at 200 mile round trip.
Manny not a problem.
We park and plug in.
Next morning 6:30-7:00 Manny jacks up the front end of our GMC.
Then here comes the rain.
This is mid January.
Your not going to work in the rain?
Manny gives me a "Look"
We get back the next day new one ton installed.
Manny has us follow him to his local front end shop.
The owner of the shop has us in and out in just over an hour
Still raining.
I know this is a long story
We where so impressed with Manny and his work ethics.
Thank you Manny.
Gotta Love This Guy.

When it comes time, I would like to get one of Mannys transmissions. Problem is, I live on the East coast. I know I can have it shipped, but can I ship Manny too??
Otherwise I could probably r&r it myself if I had good instructions. I think that's what would be great to have a video of, the "tips and tricks". Even a couple of pics of the things that help make it easier would be very helpful.

Jim Bounds has them in stock. Manny flies in and builds a bunch.

Sadly even that's 1200 miles away. I'd still have to figure out how to put it in on my driveway.

Pulling the trans is not difficult. I can not do it in Manny's time but here are my hints.

A flat surface (preferably concrete.

Remove the wheel liners. It gives you more room to work.

A floor jack. To raise the coach and drop the trans with.

A piece of angle or steel square tube to put across the hatch hole. I have heard of people using a wood 2x2 in an emergency.

Through the piece across the hatch attach two eye bolts and two pieces of chain. The chain gets attached to the two bolts holes on the back of the heads to support the rear of the engine while the trans is removed.

After that it is merely a matter of disconnecting things and removing bolts.

It took two of us 1.5 hours to get the trans out and about 2.5 hours to install the new one and put the coach back on the road.

That is almost 3 times Manny's 1.5 hour time.

Guys,
Were missing the point here!

Other than the gantry (metal tower over the hatch) as KenHen calls it, the tools are not that special. Two jack stands and a floor jack he pumps himself. Two come-a-longs, two pieces of chain and end wrenches. I would like to say he uses his pneumatic wrenches with specially made attachments, but nope. Creeper and some end wrenches. He did use a socket a couple of times on inner CVs because he was also putting in a 3.21 final drive. Oh, and a stainless steel pan, big, square, flat and very low on castors to let it ride out on. It's belly drags a tiny bit on unlevel concrete. He also has a small pan for bolts.

He has just done this so many times he knows what comes next with no wasted moves.

No way on god's green earth I'd ever trust a wooden 2x2 to support the back
of the engine!!! Just not strong enough when someone WILL be working
under it. A 2x4, clear of knots and with the 4" vertical, MAYBE -- but not
willingly.
