Well it appears I need to do both Outer CV Joint Boots... So I'm trying to decide whether to by the Outer Axle/CV Kit from Applied X2 Ea. or to just by the Boot Kits and re-grease the existing joints?

If I just buy the boot kits, what kind of grease should I use?

Thanks again, as always for the help...

Most auto parts stores sell a moly based grease specifically for CV joints. It is a lighter consistency (weight) than regular chassis or bearing grease and made to stay in the joint better. It usually comes in a toothpaste type tube.

Steve,

Check the kit when you buy it. Many come with a packet of grease.

Hints:
- Disassemble and clean the joint thoroughly as any grit left behind can damage a joints working surfaces.

- Have a friend there to stay clean while you fight the boot on. You only need one of you to be messed up with that grease.

I have a few of the kit packages of grease around here because I'm never sure what it is and I hate doing that job over. So, I always the best moly loaded grease I can find. For the last few years that has been Valvoline Syn-Power(sp?). It is nasty stuff and will stain any clothing it gets near, but it does the job. (It isn't cheap and you have to go find it.)

take a careful look
if the cv joints are worn, the bearings need to be done
if the bearing need to be done,
the bushings and ball joints are worn

think about the 1 ton,
cheaper, and longer lasting

Matt,

I have a few of the grease packets at my shop in Sydney. There I use Caterpillar Desert Gold which Bob Cook told me about when I
mentioned I couldn't by SynPower or Dura Blend in Australia. IIRC DG has specs the same or very close to SynPower.

Napa stocks SynPower and IIRC it's around $7.00 a tube.

Clean the seating surface of the boot / CV joint with carb or break cleaner before pull the boot on so that it won't slip off after
you tighten the band clamp.

Regards,
Rob M.

Matt - when you use the Synpower how do you determine the correct amount to use. With the packets it's predetermined but not so with a tube of Synpower in a grease gun. BTW I get my Synpower at NAPA.

Steve,

In discussions with a GKN (a supplier to OE) engineer about CV joints and greases, he indicated that they determined fill by packing the joint solid and adding about 5 to 10% more in the boot. So that is what I have tried to do since.

It turns out that there were few difficulties with a solid fill, and solid fill was easy to do on the line. The extra was just to cover leakage, but more than that could cause the boot to breach (that may lead to a warranty claim). In their own tests, a fill less than half could increase failures in high temperature and high load situations.

Carl,

If you're willing to take on a GMC "roundtoit;" next time you're in an auto parts store could you please get details on the CV joint
moly grease.

Thanks,

Michael,
I run the same oil (Mobile 20-50) year round as I use our coach all year. There is no need to change oil between winter and summer. What are you running in the coach now?

Check your Maintenance Manual for the temperature ranges recommended for oil viscosity. Ignore the part about single grade oils being preferred. It is no longer true.

In my MM, Figure 11 illustrates that 10W30 will work for temps from -10F to +120F.
