We drove out of Texas and much of the way across NM today. No issues.

Question for the group-why have we not had a single vapor lock issue?

It has been near or over 100 every day, the cross overs are not blocked, and with a bum fan clutch the coach runs a bit hot which should spell vapor lock. We are at low altitudes so far but will climb as we approach the Pacific.

So, what is preventing it? We had JimB's guys install one of the large diesel type water separators up front on the firewall outboard of the master cyl. They also installed one of Jim's fuel pump to carb insulated flex lines and a booster electric fuel pump (which we have so far never needed). Other than that everything is dead stock. We are buying good quality regular fuel from know brand stations (shell, chevron) and have added ethanol treatment with every tank. Tried Lucas, Rislone and an enzyme based product called StarTron so really can't tell which, if any of them, might be helping.

Any thoughts from the collective wisdom?

Hasn't vapor lock more been an incident in stop and go traffic than at highway speeds?

Jerry,

I'd love to stick my chest out and take credit but really, I am surprised you have not had to resort to kicking the aux pump!  For the rest of you, we tapped in the canister marine style seperator right at the fuel crosspipe.  The rest of the system is bone stock, new vapor seperator, new A/B solenoid, ethanol resistent 3/8" hose run the way the book says.

Jerry, still please test the electric fuel pump each time you start the coach.  If you find you need it, you know it will work.  We have had 2 coaches had blown fuses rendering the countermeasure useless.

Great to hear, I know you mind is going fast creating data-- please keep it up.  One question from an earlier post, you said you had a vibration at 65 mph, can you drive through it or is it pretty much on you anything over 65 mph!

See guys, I have people all year coming and going, bunches of them have stuff we've dealt with, sometimes I only hear about things when there is a problem, you guys are see hopefully all of the good things but also the other stuff too!  Hey, I enjoy it-- Hey Jerry, talk a little about those Maxvent fans you have-- how are they doing and all?

Enquiring Minds...

Jerry,

Maybe the water separator is making the difference. Or. maybe it's the ethanol treatment. I have had minimal vapor lock on highways, and then only at low elevations, where it tends to be the hottest. The booster electric fuel pump has almost always cured it.

A couple of years ago, we went to Flagstaff in July. There are several BIG climbs on I-17, north of Phoenix. I had been having trouble between Casa Grande and Phoenix, and had changed the carb inlet filter and the electric fuel pump filter along the road. I barely made it up the grade from Black Canyon City to the rest area at Sunset Point. I changed the last remaining filter at the rest area. By that time, we were near 4,000 feet and the problem went away for the most part. Even though I didn't really need it, I stopped in Camp Verde and topped off the tanks. No more issues the rest of the way to Flagstaff, despite several more serious climbs.

It may have been due to a tank full of winter formula gas that had been in the tanks since probably April. The coach ran like a top all the way home, even between Phoenix and Tucson, a climb of 1300'in 120 miles, at over 100 degrees.

Wonder if the lines on that top of the tanks have been replaced?

Gene,

The lines felt good, someone had been in ther replacing several.  They all were not totally new but there was enough to say things looked good under there.  We did lift the body off the tanks by installing our 1/2 gap body pad set, his pads were crushed and some missing.  See the problem on these beasts is not all the things you do and that list rather it's where to stop!  It's a value judgement, takes no brains to just rip it all out by the roots-- we do that often when needed.  This coach had been maintained to the T's since it left CLASCO.  All manner of work was done then, nothing was overlooked so yea, this coach still has some of the integrity they put into it back then.

Great posts to follow you across the country.
Would like to hear more about the water separator installation & maybe some pictures of it when you can.
