Todd,

Since I live in Australia I save up my tools I save my broken tools up and bring them back with me. The last time I was at Sears I
had a couple of screwdrivers, a few sockets, a ratchet and a pair of pliers. I found new replacements from the displays and went to
the cashier. I lined the old ones up next to the new ones and the girl began checking me out when a guy walks up and starts looking
at the tools and says something like "these tools don't look bad" followed up by "why do you have so many of them?" I looked him
straight in the eye and said; "I live in Australia and only come back to the USA on occasion. By the way I have been buying Sears
tools for forty years and have NEVER been questioned like this before, in the past anytime I brought in tool I considered broken it
was exchanged without question. Has Sears changed their policy?" The girl said; "there's no problem" and continued to do the
exchange and the guy walked away without saying a word.

Regards,

Rob M.

I recently returned a 1/2" ratchet to sears that had been living on the footwell of my lesbaru for about three months waiting for me
to simultaneously remember / have the time to detour by to get my "free replacement". When I took it in the guy looked at it and
reached for a drawer below the register and quickly removed a similar Craftsman 1/2" ratchet which he handed to me with the " I
diddnt steal it" yellow sticker on it, no packaging. I noticed that it was not a new ratchet immediately by the pipe cheater bar
cuts in the handle and some guy named Bart had engraved his name into the side of the gear head. That did not bother me nearly as
much as the banana shape of the handle. I pointed this out to the sales clerk and he remedied the situation by digging another
ratchet out of the drawer which was apparently historically owned by BJ. This ratchet had a straight handle and the gear head
worked. It had a couple of cheater bar cuts in it as well which made it a pretty like k

ind and quality replacement for mine.

It used to be when you broke a craftsman tool you got a NEW one.

Times change I guess

Todd Sullivan

Local Sears does not replace ratchets.. It repairs them while you wait.

Just make sure that the tool is damaged beyond repair when you take it in.

Make sure you trade in any Craftsman tool soon. Sears is on it's way out.

I just replaced a$150 torque wrench, no questions, told them it doesn't click when torque is achieved. They didn't have old style, walked out with updated version.

About 11 or 12 years ago my daughter worked at Sears Hardware. She "repaired" most ratchets that came in and gave them back to the customer.

She was not allowed to wait on me. So when I brought in a ratchet she called the manager over to take care of me. When she explained that I was her father the manager said "Do not repair that one. Give him anew one." Repair or replace is an option and up to the Sears employee at the time.

About 40 years ago, I got a 6" 'PennCraft' (JC Penney) adjustable wrench for Christmas. Lifetime warranty. It's still in perfect condition in spite of being used often, but I've often wondered what will happen when I take it back because they no longer sell tools.

Ace Hardware has a big Craftsman tool section now. I wonder what the policy is there.

Don't know about Ace, but Orchard Supply Hardware recently spun off from Sears and still carries Craftsman. I have exchanged a couple of ratchets there, replaced with new ones off the shelf, no questions and no hassles.

Check out the "country of manufacture" of the craptsman tool line.
I may rethink my supplier of choice for future tools.

Took a Craftsman drill that had given up the ghost back to Sears. They took it in for repairs. When I came to pick it up they returned it to me as a paper bag full of parts. Said they couldn't fix it. As the old joke goes I still have the bag.
Haven't bought too many Sears tools since.

Sad as years ago the level of quality of Craftsman tools was fine and a better value than Snapon for the driveway mechanic. We'd run to Sears to get that tool we needed or needed replaced (usually failed through missuse) and would maybe buy some Levis if there was a sale going on. Tools have taken on that 'off shore shiny finish' in recent years. Harbor Fright isn't helping their situation.

'long time ago I had some Craftsman tools that had "Forged in USA" on them. Then I bought some new tools and they didn't have that on them. I called Sears Canada and asked what was going on. Their reply was, "the tools are made in Taiwan to Sears standards" My reply was "You have lowered your standards".
Sears will soon be history.

To Harry and others. I used to have the opportunity to travel to Raleigh N.C. on business. I found the Sears tools available there were much better than were available in Canada and this was prior to 1990. The 3 stainless steel ratchets I have from Sears Raleigh are "cool" (1/4", 3/8" 1/2")
It was announced the other day that the BIG Sears store in the Yorkdale Mall in Toronto will be closing. Their tool section has been miniscule recently. Considering the rent at Yordale, the size of the Sears store and their inventory, I've wondered for a long time how they stayed open.
