Met a guy with 30+ years experience working on Onan's he came over today and got mine running!! and it puts out 125 Volts. Never tested under load because of the carb issue.

BUT....

Here is what it needs:

New Control Board
Rebuilt Carb
Choke Unit

My plan is to buy a new board with picktail from Applied GMC. But the carb I have is not correct.

Anyone have a known good used or rebuild able 6K carb?

($ 280.00 for a rebuilt one from Applied or used carb and $ 29.00 Rebuild Kit)I know I'm cheap...LOL

NO ONE carries the proper choke though, anyone got a good used one?

Thanks for the help in advance...

Steve

The choke assembly is not to be had. I am assuming that you really mean the bimetal pot that sits on the exhaust manifold. There was a work around, using a solenoid, but that solenoid is no longer available either. One could use a servo to pull the choke on remotely, but it would be either on or off. A stepper motor, with microcpu control would also do the job. Probably very cheap.
Carb kit is pretty simple. It does not contain one "o" ring (I forgot which one), so be careful when you take your carb apart.
I no longer have Mr. Onan, so this limits my answer.
Be glad that you found someone who knows the Onan. They are becoming a rare treasure.

Thanks for the advice, had no idea about the o-ring. I guess I just need a used carb then, to avoid the $ 80.00 core. Id rather play it safe.

The "Onan Dude" told me he could set up a manual choke, but that seems like a pain... LOL I keep on the lookout for a choke...

Thanks again,

Steve

My Onan always started without a working choke at least down to about 30 degrees F. I never tried to start colder than 30.

Look here for info on choke. Click on waking the Onan to see instructions on refreshing the carb.

Dennis, that is the solenoid that is not available from that source, or anywhere else that I can find.

I spoke with JimK at Applied GMC yesterday and he said that he has a workaround for the choke issue. I told him to put one together for me.... He said whatever it is takes 7-10 day to get ready...

I ordered it so I'll let you know how it works out...

The counter guy at my local NAPA recognized the Onan choke-pull-off and said it was used on some 1960's AMC cars.

I was thinking of mounting a thermostatic-button type switch on the exhaust manifold and using it to pull in a small solenoid instead of trying to find the original part.
