Im wondering if anyone has come up with a way to get fresh air to the blower intake. I notice that when stopped I sometimes get the smell of the hot motor coming through the vents. I was thinking about putting some kind of hose to draw the air from lower down somehow. Maybe from behind the bumper? The problem seems the amount of room by the opening in the blower box. The windshield wiper arm also swings in front of it. It's really not that bad, but I do find it somewhat annoying sometimes. Any thoughts?

A problem with drawing it lower down is that you'll pick up exhaust fumes from other vehicles when you are in traffic.

I'd just learn to live with it the short times you are stopped.

This won't help much at stop lights, but will offer copious air under way

Daryn,
The problem is not so much caused by emissions from the vehicles around
you while in traffic, it is mostly all coming from your own engine
compartment. Ducting from another location is nearly impossible because of
the proximity of the access panels and the wiper mechanisms. If you have a
'75 or '76, the solution is to change it over to a complete recirc system
by opening up the original hole from the cockpit to the rear HVAC plenum,
and blocking off the underhood intake. The system will also perform much
better this way. Here is an excellent article on the different types of
systems GM used on the GMC. The best is the '77 and '78.

Ok Folks, what is the best route on a 74?

Forgetting it entirely and going with an aftermarket set up? I live in the part of Florida that has no breezes.

Check for oil leaks. One drop of oil on a manifold can produce a lot of smoke and odor. You might fabricate the rubberized "horse blinder flaps" like on the final version. I prefer the outside air source so you create positive pressure indoors and don't draw exhaust and sewer fumes in. Engine smell is better than those options especially monoxide if you run the Onan on the road. Another reason GM went to no OFF on the fan just lowest speed.
