Today I got my aluminum rims for the Royale from JimK at AppliedGMC. Too
bad they didn't arive until late this evening on my day off. Ah, well.
Several feet of milspec über fuel-line and new battery are installed. Many
thanks to fellow GMCer Tom Phipps, and my mobile mechanic Freddy. Will get
tires mounted to rims tomorrow, and bring them back home until the Olds 403
had been woke back up. Difficulty level: unknown quantity of two year old
gas in two 25 gallon tanks treated with one can of Seafoam. Freddy wants to
drop the tanks and clean them out. How hard is that?

Also, as we were pulling out of my neighborhood, Tom said he spotted a GMC.
We turned around, and sure enough we found TZE166V101728 at a nearyby
business that handles auctions. I shot video and took pictures and will
upload them later. It was converted into a people carrier, full of benches
along the walls and captains chairs up front. I want to say I've seen
photos of it before. I can't vouch for its condition, although it was
clean, and I can get anyone interested in touch with the seller.

Robin,

I can't offer any tank dropping experience with GMC's but I did drop the tank on a VW Vanagon that's not been run in over 20 years.

The gunk in the tank was solid. All liquids were long evaporated off. I really think you should drop the (probably empty) tanks and deal with that gunk. I bought a new tank. My efforts to clean it ended up tarring my back lawn, sawhorses, and coveralls. Hopefully your coach was put away dry.

Don't let this dissuade you. Maybe a dozen fuel filters and some alcohol laden fuel will result in pristine steel tanks. I honestly think it's a possibility.

Larry, something that didn't occur to me... I can empty the bad gas (if
any) with an electric fuel pump. The RV was put away pre-ethanol, and other
than one tank of ethanol fuel, has never seen much ethanol. Of course, that
doesn't mean that there's not sludge in the tanks. But. For now my main
goal is get rolling to a new location. If I dump the bad gas and put in
good gas (possibly even pure gas) plus a good fuel filter with spares in
the passenger seat, can I "get by" without dropping the tank for the 30
miles I've got to drive to get to my new storage location?

I'd put a very large cartridge filter in the line and have a few extras in the glove box, and drive the thing. Ethanol is a good thing for dirty tanks. A bad thing for rubber hoses and subsequently filters.

While I would always recommend fixing it correctly, if possible, If it gets really bad and you NEED to get it out of there, You could easily make it that far with outboard boat tank sitting on the passenger floorboard.

Robin,
Each tank has a drain plug on the drivers side, front corner of each tank.
It takes an allen wrench to loosen the plug. Good luck sometimes the plug
is very difficult to turn.

Sometimes the Allen wrench will strip the flats but usually there is enough of the plug extending to get a small pipe wrench on it to turn it out.

The GMC that Robin and I found had been professionally converted to a people carrier, or a party van. Had matched Flexsteel Captains chairs for front seats and along both walls. About ten of them. Bath and cooking units removed. Frig retained. Had complete vacuum system still inside. Two A/C's and Fantastic Fans. Headliner was covered with a soft white material. Had OEM radio installed. Looked very clean.
Onan in place but noted as having carb problems.
Robin took lots of photos.
Located at an auction place, where it did not meet the reserve price of $11K.
Not my cup of tea.

Still had the battroom. It was the closet/cabinets/galley that was removed.

Hey, Tom, I'm going today to get the tires put on the rims. I'm thinking
pump out the gas tanks with electric pump. then put in good gas, and just
hope that a filter catches anything.
