anyone know the thickness of the aluminum skin on the upper part of the coach body? I'm thinking about plugging one of the window holes.... Also what grade is the aluminum 3032, 6061, etc.?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve,

I haven't posted lately, but I do keep an eye on the net.
The skin thickness is 1/16", as to the alloy that's a good question, may be
someone knows, I wasn't able to find out when I tried.
7 or 8 years ago I talked with Wes at Cinnabar and asked him that question,
his reply was that it's on the blue prints but I don't feel like looking it
up.
I called Buskirk and asked them, they didn't know, I asked them what they
ordered to stretch a coach, they said aluminum, I said thank you.
When I was welding aluminum plates for a floor, I used 5052 it worked well
with the existing metal on the coach.

Aluminum is sold by decimal thickness. .063 is what you tell the guy at the sales desk. I'm not sure what the alloy is but I'm confident it is NOT 1100 or 3003 (it is too soft) and doubt it is 6061 because it is more expensive and stronger than needed for the skin. The extrusions will be 6061. I strongly suspect the skin is 5052 or similar. 5052 will certainly work. There are other alloys but they are somewhat exotic and would have been too expensive for GM to have used.

Kerry,

I reckon that you're right vis-à-vis the extrusions as they are pretty tough to drill through I wonder if they aren't T-6!
