Greetings all -

As the topic suggests, I'm looking to replace my original roof top air. Any and all comments are certainly appreciated. The plastic cover flew off somewhere in Arizona - and now I have this hulk of a device up on the roof... And - I figure that a new unit will likely cool alot better.

Preferring a low profile unit.

I've read of our preference for Carrier units - but they're pretty much all gone...

In my research - one shop says that the Carrier unit was actually manufactured by Gree... Anyone know ??

Thanks !!

Well I worked for United Technologies, the corporation that "owns" Carrier and I would be surprised if that was true. While Carrier
is no longer in the RV A/C business I believe you'll find they are still in the truck refrigeration business.

Gree is a Chinese manufacturer with plants around the world. I'd never heard of them before my recent search for a rooftop AC replacement.

After seeing the dearth of Carrier units available I decided to try the Duracool R-22 recharge kit with the saddle tap. My Intertherm Polaris is a low profile scroll compressor that just doesn't blow cold. All the coils look clean to me - inside and out - and the unit looks so well built being almost all composite construction - so I've got little to loose.

I had half thought that the line voltage was too low for the AC unit while plugged into my house with a long extension cord so I fired up the Onan, let it settle in, and then tried the AC. No difference. I'd be happy to add a can of Duracool each year if that's all it takes to keep it running cool. Look down this page to where their Duracool 22 a Refrigerant Kits & Accessories are listed <http://www.duracool.com/ecom/shoppingcart.html>

I may be tossing a few dollars down the hole, but then again, I might be saving a few hundred. I'll take the gamble, if not just for the fun of it!

That Carrier website is one of the worst I've ever seen! Is it 1999 still? I remember Prodigy pages that were more dynamic than this.

Thank you Dennis !!

Did you get the 13.5 or the 15K BTU unit ??

That remote control is appealing...

I like the Coleman / Polar because of the 17" exhaust fan on top. Does the Gree have something similar ??

Larry,

Take a look at the UTC website and see what the stock has done over the past 25 years and you'll see something "dynamic." ;-)

BTW it's just a guess but I'd say UTC forced Carrier out of the RV business because the RV A/C business unit didn't meet corporate
requirements. I can't remember the numbers on sales and profits any more but basically if the unit didn't meet UTC requirements the
unit got sold or shut down.

Rob M.

ok I have it installed its a 13.5 its very well made easy to install. It has a auto setting witch is great so you don't freeze at night when you don't want to get up to turn the fan down . love the remote. I have it installed in the front hole so it blows on the drivers seat. the blower pushes ail all the way to the windshield and I can feel the air while I'm driving. I could not feel the air with the Coleman unit from the drivers set. the vents have a oscillate mode witch is cool. the only draw back that I can see is the controls on the ceiling package is hard to see its on the bottom and not the side so just use the remote and the roof unit is about 1" or so taller my back Coleman so that means I will buy one for the back to match

Thanks Dennis -

Sounds like you're happy with your new unit - congratulations.

I'm surprised that it's taller than the old unit though - I thought that most new ones were low profile by default.

That oscillating feature is very appealing !!

So... I've got a deal working on a Coleman/Polar 15K unit. Research tells me that it's an R-22 unit. Should this concern me?? Can I / should I recharge it with duracool ??

Maybe that's why it's a deal eh ??

Does the Gree unit have vents that blow through both forward and rearward? I assume it does...?

My coach only has one AC unit currently. Does anyone know if they are pre-wired for more than one unit from the factory?

I haven't torn my ceiling down yet to find out. IF it is not pre-wired, how hard is it to wire a second unit? And is it worth it? What is required to wire it?

Thanks,

Steve

It does have vents front and back and one on the bottom that you can open .it cools the coach down fromover 100 deg. In about 1.5 hr to 78 without the back ac running .
