I know some people that have Corvairs that run well on E85 with only a minor main jet, and timing changes. And Corvairs were not affected with the mandate of unleaded gas. Unleaded gas is better for them then leaded gas was. Bob Dunahugh

Bob,
Those are two very different problems.

As soon as an engine has hardened inserts for valve seats (almost all AL heads do), they can run unleaded with no issue.

As soon as you are willing to make an alcohol tolerant fuel system and recalibrate the engine, you can run virtually any spark ignition engine on any alcohol blend. We even ran a Buick Regal on neat methanol. You just have to be ready for the fuel consumption penalty.

Yes Matt. There are two different issues here. The point was that there were some older vehicles that had features that made them more adaptable to modern changes. Until the advent of unleaded gas. Most vehicles prior to 1972. Didn't have hardened valve seat inserts, as they do now. Alum heads were not vary common back then. Flame hardened valve seats like we have in our GMC's filled the gap between iron valve seats, and hardened valve seat inserts. Bob Dunahugh

Bob,

The ONLY reason for tetra-eythyl lead was to improve octane. The price we paid for it was well past diminishing return in my book. In those times, I had several cars that were hard pressed to get 5K miles out of a set of spark plugs and lets just not go into the lead fouling in combustion chambers and valves.

It's a lot worse than that, the reduction of lead in gas correlated with
the murder rate falling in half over the past decades, it accounts for 90%
of it. A rather strong corroralion.
