Got any tips for sealing the valve covers? Can't
seem to keep the oil on the inside. I tried installing
thicker gaskets, and also hammering the bolt holes
on the cover flat (from where the bolts had deformed
the sheet metal). I thought about RTV, but want
to be able to still remove them in future.
So what works? Or are leaky valve covers just part
of the "charm"...
thanks

Karen,
Before I can answer this I need to know what kind of valve cover gaskets you have, cork, rubber, or composite. Also what brand are
they.
Regards,
Rob M.

When I got my coach, both valve covers leaked. When I went to replace them, one had a gasket and one had RTV only. The RTV only one leaked worse than the one with the gasket. I installed FelPro composite gaskets and used gray RTV on both sides. I figure, with a non adjustable valve train, there was no reason to glue them on with the RTV. It's been holding fine for over four years.

Do you have to cut it apart later to get the covers off again?
I suspect this engine may be coming out soon, so don't want
to make it too difficult to get the covers off.

If you're thinking the engine will be coming out soon, just use RTV on one side like Howard suggested. They will break loose with some extra prying, even with RTV on both sides.

I agree with using RTV on both sides. A couple months ago when we did the crossover block, we installed new gaskets on CLEANED WITH LACQUER THINNER metal...really, really clean. That is, keep cleaning the metal until you get nothing on the thinner damp rag.
Then we put a thin layer of RTV on each the valve cover, installed the gasket, and put a thin layer on the gasket before installing it on the head. No leak for the few miles it was driven but it was not hard to get off. Just bumped it with a block of wood and it peeled off.

Someone makes a valvee cover gasket that is a piece of steel sandwiched between two pieces of cork. I went through what you are and the ribber ones were the worse. I do not have the part number right now because I'm sitting in my car at the work rally. Bob Burkitt has the number. Send him and email and I'm sure he will have the number for you.

Karen,
When the guys at the COOP replaced the black rubber valve cover gaskets on Double Trouble I had them use black RTV to attach them to
the valve cover. To make sure they stayed in place I tied the gaskets in place with a piece of thread through each bolt hole.
They allowed the RTV to cure for a hour or so then put a VERY light coat of RTV on the gaskets and quickly set the valve covers on
the head. They finger tighten them using a nut driver. I "torqued" them myself with the same nut driver. No leaks to date.
Regards,
Rob M.

They're black rubber, can't remember the brand now. I'm
happy to change them to something else if it works better.
thanks

I believe the part number that you want is Mr. Gasket 5875 . It is a steel core, rubberized cork gasket.

Same as I posted FelPro RTV on the covers only.
I have the same setup on our 1950 Chevy pickup with the 58 261 engine.
No leaks.
