Has anyone ever thought about creating a roof shade for their GMC for use when there is no natural shade available? Just doing some searches online I have found several concepts but no real options out there that I can find. I would think this would be a great way to shield the roof from direct sunlight and keep the AC from having to work so hard.

Half the benefit of solar panels? I've heard the idea called a tropical
roof, to shade the real roof.

Actually that's not a bad idea...just a matter of a workable and manageable canvas system that does not take "herculean" effort to put up and down.
Years ago, Land Rover had a double roof that was about 2' off the main roof and, as I understand was an option used on very hot climate applications.
It was reasonably effective given that they did not offer air conditioning.

I have a 10x20' canopy that I used when I was working car swap meets and such. It has 6 legs made from the top rail of chain link fencing. You can get them in any size you want. It takes at least 2 people to put one up but would work for what you describe.

And that's the fly in the ointment!

I've seen "awnings" with little flaps in it that when the wind blew would lift up an allow it to pass through which is what I think
would be required or the first blast of wind that hits the side of the GMC will tear the "tent" right off!

Regards,
Rob M.

We do a lot of high altitude hot weather camping. 8 years ago I had a 12' x 28' shade cloth made out of Aluminet material. This stuff is made from metalized polyester, is very tough, reflects sunlight, vents hot air and is super light. It is fully hemmed and has metal grommets installed. When camping I just throw it over the coach and tie it down with 6 bungee cords. It will hold up to almost any wind and you can run the roof air under it.
Look it up on the internet. It's great stuff. This one custom made, cost about $125. Well worth the price.

Aluminet was very popular at Burning Man! Great stuff. Much better shade
material than a cargo parachute (HOT).
