We will be going to Summit Raceway park with track side camping and was wondering if anyone knows of a way to provide seating for one or two on the roof. I would empty the roof storage box to get rid of the weight we usually carry Since the track has a buffer between the track and our spot the roof would give us the best view and keep us close to our cold drinks.
Thanks for any ideas

Many years ago I saw a GMC with the top half of a VW bus grafted on top. I don't know if they were using it for seating or for sleeping but they did have a ladder inside that would provide access.

The only space, if you have 2 ACs would be forward of the front AC unit,
no? I've had 2 people on top with some heavy solar panels and it didn't
go oval on me. I'd just bring a couple camp chairs up there, probably on
some 1x6s (crosswise to the ribs) to spread the load. If there's
drinking involved, I'd add a tether to each drinker. ;-)

There were two buddies in Alabama who had put a floor on the roof of their GMCs for watching NASCAR races. The USAF had built an upper floor on their down range GMCs for missle/weapon tracking. So, it can be done.
The question would to be to spread out the contact points to keep from the legs of your chairs from denting or holding the roof aluminum. Perhaps a removable plywood structure that had curved supports to match the roofs curve. Built in sections might be a usable idea.
Roof with chairs and ice coolers would be neat to observe from. Be sure to add shade, I'm sure the roof could get hot in the sun.

If your roof pod is attached with well nuts, you could remove the roof pod
quickly, lay it on a 3/4 piece of plywood and mark the holes. Then drill
the plywood, and attach it to your roof. Set your chairs on the plywood
to avoid any roof damage. OSHA would not approve but it would be cheap.

Keep away from the seam of the fiberglass cap and where the aluminum joins.
Spread out the weight so it is spread out.
Area above the door is sensitive to bowing out when weight is applied in
that area.

Jim,

The PPO of our Palm Beach had Tom Hampton fit a sheet of aluminum checker
plate on the roof, so he could go to Florida and watch the races. He
weighed 300+. I took it off because I wanted a roof pod.
It is still in the garage, along with all the other STUFF!

Well......... The GMC has been apart all winter and spring and I just
haven't been
up to putting it together. I've got a guy in buying out my side business
and if I can
get him loaded and gone, I'd like to drive over just to see some familiar
faces.
Just have to see how things work out.

Check the track web site, some have rules about such activities as a result of safety issues. Falling from 8 feet can be a big problem. I believe Road Atlanta requires a railing. Have fun, but be safe is my motto.

It would seem to me that a scaffold that is freestanding and merely has a
deck above the coach, that could be broken down and stored would be a
pretty good solution.

there was a GMC with such a scaffold that sold on eBay 4 or 5 years ago. I wasn't able to find out anything about the scaffold or where the coach went. No clue how stable it was or how it was stored. It seemed like a great idea except that it would still be much shorter than the big pushers parked on either side of you.

If this request is aimed at me,all it is is 4 by 8 sheet of aluminum checker
plate cut to
fit around the obstacles and held down with a bunch of riv-nuts.(still
there)
Since we wanted a pod AND a fantastic vent in the bath, it was removed.
I think the summer sun reflecting on the aluminum was not good.
