Instead of a paint job, I am looking into removing our old faded stripes on our Painted Desert and putting new ones on as our overall paint job is still very good. Does anyone know the actual color numbers of the original two stripes?

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/500/medium/WP_001256.jpg

My current stripes are far too faded to get an idea of what color they were intended to be. And my wife (proud owner of a 72 bright Orange Super Beetle) is very partial to the color Orange so no problem in that department.

Thanks!

I'll just match the color of the bright Orange Super Beetle and set it up as a towd.

That's the plan eventually... Problem is we can't flat tow it.  Have to get a tow dolly for it.

That's a good plan to just match the color of the beetle though.  What's the best way of getting a sample from an existing car?

Why can't it be flat towd?

I know there is a difference between the front structure of the Beetle and Super Beetle, but they make base plates for both.

Or is it a Volkswagen Autostick?

As for a color sample, is there a small removable part that is the color you need? (On the GMC it would be a mirror bracket.)

Super Beetles have a weaker front end structure that should/must also be reinforced on the strut towers. Just remembering very dated towing information, but someone makes reinforcements for the front end.
Matching stipe color to Beetle Orange would be cool. Nice visual tye-in.

I don't think there was a paint code as it was a decal with a GM part number. Open the hoods and there should be a 1/4" unfaded. I picked the color for the EiII brown that way and looking at the sales brochures as well. Colors are easy to change in the computer. The curve was the hard part.

If I understand correctly VW autostick is a manual transmission with some "magic" making it so you do not have to use the clutch to shift. makes me think it should be able to be towed with the rear wheels on the ground. If so, the car should be able to be made into a towd.

If not, a tow dolly will not help, unless put on the dolly backwards. I'd rather use a trailer. It would be less wear and tear on the Bug and the trailer could be used for other things.

Right... most likely we would put it rear wheels up. Good point about the trailer having other uses as well... Now just need to find a nice light trailer in Orange...

Actually just found the color code on the Super Beetle.  It's Brilliant Orange L20B which cross references to 2477 Ditzler and 36020 Dupont.  Would want to have the main orange stripe be the same.

Do you still have a contact at the graphics shop that did your stripes to get the curve right?

Someone fill in the blanks here please.  As I remember, the auto stick had a double oil pump, the rear one pumping ATF which was used to run a clutch servo.  When you moved the gearshift at all, the servo disengaged the clutch and you could shift.  There was a tank in the engine compartment for the ATF.  It was I think a 3 speed, perhaps because it needed some sort of fluid coupling to let it stop in gear?  It's been many years, and the one I drvoe for a day was totally unimpressive.
