Solder or epoxy for a hole to get me home? Do not want to try stop leak?

It is not an aluminum radiator.

Is it leaking from a fin or the tank? How far do you need to drive?

Not from tank. Was a pinhole leak in fin. I tried to crimp it off and made it worse.

Solder would be quickest repair if you can get at the spot. Or you can get a epoxy stick that you cut a piece off and knead it then stick it on the hole; downside is it takes awhile to fully cure but it is waterproof.

I assume you mean the tube, not the fin. As the fins are just flat metal pieces attached to the tubes. I once had a rock hit a tube gong north down the Grapevine in California. It put a small hole in it. I clamped it with a pair of vise grips and then wired the vise grips to keep them from flopping. I drove all the way back to San Francisco with it and repaired the radiator later.

Jon,

Your aversion to stop-leak may not be justified. In '99 I took my GMC to
Jim Bounds for wheel alignment, among other things. Before the alignment,
Jim wanted to test drive it, so we went "around the block". When we got
back, water was spurting from the lower radiator, which I had not then
covered with a gravel guard. A stone had knocked a hole in the radiator.
Jim put in a can of stop-leak. That radiator is today in my son's coach
with probably 75,000 miles added since then. It's never leaked again, nor
been repaired.

I blew a decent size hole in my radiator going to the Delaware GMCMI rally. After trying soldering, and also trying crimping the tube, I went to Home Depot and got a plumbers epoxy stick. This is the 2 part epoxy that you cut off a piece and kneed the two parts together. It worked great and held until I replaced the radiator with an aluminum one. The stuff set up very quickly. It cures with heat and of course heated coolant going through it set it almost immediately. Leave the radiator cap loose and drive it for 10 miles, then check to see if it is hard. If hard, then tighten the cap and go on your way.

I have also fixed engine oil leaks on an airplane engine and a Blazer oil pan with this same stuff. They have held for many years.

I rode with you more than once in that Vibe. If I can stand that, you sure can stand to go for an airplane ride.

You should have seen this one it had dents all over it and he still drove it.

He got him an new one now. It is a dual powered car. He calls it a Hybrid. It has a big wind up key on the back and solar cells on top to charge the batteries. He uses the solar cells during the day and winds the big key after dark.

Just a quick update.

my radiator was shot. it was thin all over from the inside.

the quote for re-core, was $660. I ended up getting a radiator from another GMCer, for alot less. and my bad radiator, is in storage.

anyway, the Radiator I installed, came out of a 455 GMC. mine is a 75 palm beach, with 455.

It looks though that the upper radator hose inlet was larger. I had a heck of a time getting that hose on. The words that were coming out of my mouth were not good ones. I did not figure this out until after everything was mounted up. it was the last thing I was putting together. so I did not get out a gauge to measure it. I swear it looked a size bigger, and by the way the two hoses I tried(1 molded, and 1 flex), it just was bigger then the old radiator was.

I did get it on, it has a heck of a hose clamp on it, and the hose is still in good shape. I am not really worried about it failing too soon. I already put 250 miles on it.

my question to the group: why was it bigger? did they change in a different year? is there a upper hose I should have that is larger on the radiator end then the thermostat housing end. (the two hoses i had, were same diameter on both ends).

anybody run into that?
