I need to start budgeting for some front end work. I've always thought this coach wanders too much, even with the back end set properly. The write-ups from Karen, Jerry, and others step me through most procedures, but I have some questions.
Do the new 1-ton front ends use urethane bushings, or are urethane bushings beneficial?
Jim K has a new upper A-Frame from the Curtis's that can add mucho caster. Good idea?
Steering components - Dave Lenzi's parts look to be thoroughly reengineered and I suspect the workmanship is Rolex-like. Also I suspect (for no rational reason) that most of my slop comes from my old steering components.
Opinions are eagerly anticipated and appreciated.

| If you have lots of dollars, willy-nilly replacement of stuff supports the vendors. I have no problem with that. If you don't have lots of dollars, let the experienced folks here help you narrow down what is wrong, and fix/replace it, not a bunch of stuff that is still serviceable.

Larry,
If the slop is in the steering system going through this procedure step by step will find it:
http://www.gmceast.com/technical/Mueller_Steering_Inspection_Guide.pdf
You are correct the parts you get from Dave Lenzi are of the highest quality.
Double Trouble and The Blue Streak have his:
a) hubs and knuckles w/grease zerk
b) idler arm
c) relay lever
d) offset upper control arms with rubber bushings (I get 5° caster on a my '75 Avion)
They also both have reinforced lower control arms from Steve Ferguson with Urethane bushings.
Regards,
Rob M.

Uerthane is a lower temp compound than the factory rubber. It also will transmit more road shock. Where the upper a bushings are prxomal to the exhaust manifolds its not a low temp environment. Follow Robs list. I could be one bad component ir several adding up. Without doing the 20 min inspection its just blind guessing. I don't like the fact that the 1 ton puts more lever arm loading on the torsion bars.

Larry,
I have about 3/4 in play in the steering wheel and it drives very well. If I am on a three lane freeway in the left hand lane it
drifts off slowly to the left, in the center lane it goes straight, and in the right lane it drifts off slowly to the right.
I went this route because I had seen Dave's workmanship and wanted to keep the front end and suspension as engineered by GMC.
A lot of people have installed the 1 Ton front end and are happy with it and empirical engineering has shown it to be OK.
Regards,
Rob M.

Netters
Very happy with ours
After installation at Manny's drove U S 17 to the coast just south of Santa Cruz to Sea Cliff California State camp ground.
This is state camp ground is located on the beach with water and electric hookup.
Then south on CA 1 all the way to Morrow Bay.
Both these routes are white knuckle highway for some folks.
Flat landers " warning" very few guard rails.
I'm married to one from Michigan.
Our GMC handled fine for the both of us.
Also like the larger brakes.
With the stock system that was tight a different story.
Thank You

The ball joints should be metric to fit the spindle so yes, they are different.
