The 78 Royale Transmode that I got this month uses the Coachman number that is stamped on the rear frame rail under the ladder as the VIN on the title. Not the GMC VIN under the engine cover up front. Thus this GMC has two VIN's on it. The 78 Royale that Linda and I have owned for 10 years and the widened door ( 54 GMC VIN's between the two coaches ) uses the GMC VIN on the title. What is the most common number used on the Coachman, or any other Transmodes ? Bob Dunahugh

The correct VIN in the one that starts with "TZE".

That said, it is not uncommon to have the "serial number" from other places on the coach used on the titles. The stamped number from Coachman is one but I have heard of numbers from the state inspection plate near the door and a sticker by the driver's window. None are "correct" but they "work."

Correcting this might make sense if you had just bought the coach and was getting it titled in your name. But if not, do you want to fight DMV to get it corrected? Here it would cost me about $100, for a corrected title if they just agreed with me!

OBTW: I noticed a small plate on a '78 Royale on the top of the door frame with a TZE. The door needed to be open to see it. I hadn't noticed this on any other coach before...

Bob,

My '76 X-Birchaven also come titled under the Coachmen number. It bothers
me, but never, in 15 years, enough to go through the hassle of trying to
get GA to change it.

I just sold my 76 23' Birchaven. It was titled under the Coachman VIN number. The inspector in the buyer's state saw the TZE number and since the Texas title doesn't match what he thinks is the VIN there is a problem. The only way to change the number in Texas would be to have the vehicle back here and get it physically inspected. Did Coachman stamp their VIN anywhere else on the vehicle typically other than on the decal in the cockpit?

Our coach is a '74 Eleganza SE and we are in California and I find no records showing it was ever registered in any state other than California. I registered it as per usual and sent the TZE vin to the insurance. We soon got a "cannot insure as it is not licensed in California" message.

I looked on the registration card and sure enough, it is registered with a number from a small plaque by the door. Go figure.

I'm no authority on Texas law, but I would suspect some sort of reciprocity between the states. I would suggest contacting the state trooper division in the state in which it now resides to see if they can work with the Texas state troopers to do the visual.

In Georgia, I had a similar situation taken care of by the local police chief. He just provided a notarized affidavit to the out of state authorities.

Hope this helps.
