My little Camco solar powered cooling fan for the refrigerator coils has bit the dust. Rather than replace the fan (the small solar panel is still fine) with another one from the RV supply, I plan to install one or two computer cooling fans in the opening of the refer vent in the roof. I don't know anything about these types of fans and would appreciate it if someone who does would clue me in on the best type, size, etc. to look for.

Thanks.

Get two 4 inch ones from your buddy. Work like a top with little draw. I used to pick them up at ham radio shows for a buck a piece.

Thanks Dan,

I'm having to move on to plan B, whatever that is. My buddy didn't have any, but he told me where to buy them. It's probably still cheaper to buy a couple of new ones than try to get a Camco from the RV supply.

I'm not entirely sure which one you need, probably somewhat depends on how much solar power you can use, but this place has a bunch of "muffin" fans fairly cheap.

Thanks Guys. I picked up two new 4" fans at a local computer store this afternoon. Since I have to pull the fridge out anyway (don't ask) I plan to install them in the upper vent opening so they pull air through the compartment and across the coils.

When I installed the fridge in the first place, I built a baffle in the back, out of foam board, per the Norcold installation instructions. Evidently, This provides very good airflow over the coils. The refrigerator works VERY well. The fan(s) may or may not really make much of a difference, but they can't hurt and are bound to do something.

Carl,

I agree 100% that it would be more efficient to put the four fans in the roof vent, however, take into consideration the access
problem once you've got the fridge back in and there's a problem with the fans.

Also you really need to put a switch on them or you'll wind up freezing food in the fridge even on the lowest setting when the
ambient temps are not high! Been there done that with the four I have installed!

Finally when you install them put them so the rotating blades are up - NOT the way I did (hanging down) the reason for that is on
occasion I can hear them vibrating and when I looked I could see that the blades were pulsing up and down. It is especially annoying
at night when you're trying to sleep.

Regards,
Rob M.

THANKS ROB, THAT IS PART OF THE REASON I NEED TO REMOVE THE FRIDGE. THE BURNED OUT CHEAP FAN IS UP THERE AND I COULD NOT ACCESS IT FROM THE ROOF VENT. THE NEW FANS HAVE A SIX YEAR WARRANTY, SO HOPEFULLY THAT WON'T BE A PROBLEM.

Also you really need to put a switch on them or you'll wind up freezing food in the fridge even on the lowest setting when the
ambient temps are not high! Been there done that with the four I have installed!

I ALREADY DO HAVE A SWITCH BETWEEN MY SMALL SOLAR PANEL AND THE EXISTING FAN. THE MAIN REASON I SWITCHED IT WAS TO BE ABLE TO TURN THE FAN OFF WHEN I DON'T HAVE THE REFRIGERATOR RUNNING. I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT THE REASON YOU GAVE, BUT IT MAKES SENSE.

Finally when you install them put them so the rotating blades are up - NOT the way I did (hanging down) the reason for that is on
occasion I can hear them vibrating and when I looked I could see that the blades were pulsing up and down. It is especially annoying
at night when you're trying to sleep.

I PLAN TO INSTALL THEM ORIENTED THE WAY YOU RECOMMEND. THE OLD ONE MADE A LITTLE NOISE, BUT SINCE IT IS OPERATED OFF OF A SOLAR PANEL, NIGHT TIME ANNOYANCE WAS NOT A FACTOR.

Regards,
Rob M.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY.

Carl, get me a picture of that baffle you made from styrofoam if you are pulling the refer.
The fans can be mounted in the top of the vent to pull the air around the baffle and coils. That is my intention. Don't have to remove the refer, just a couple of screws on the cover at the top.
At present I only have one fan blowing air on the coils. Better than none. Hooked to the solar line for use during hot daylight hours.

Dan,

The album I did on the photo site pretty well details the installation and the baffle:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g5863-norcold-refrigerator-installation.html

I'm not sure that was all absolutely necessary, as I understand the installation manual was written by Norcold's lawyers (according to Jim B), but it works well.

I tried to access my fan from the roof vent, but I couldn't get enough room to operate the screw driver in the small space. I'll try to engineer the new mounts so that service from the top is possible this time. I guess I just had a stupid attack the first time around and didn't think of it.

Dan,

This pic shows it best...sort of:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/norcold-refrigerator-installation/p40448-right-side-and-back-ba.html

TThe back of the enclosure is straight up and down and built out from the curved wall. That put the foam board about 1/2" from the back of the fridge coils. All the airflow is right up through the coils that way. I'll try to put up a couple more pics as I get back into it.
