Has anyone purchased this particular tire using the Family Motor Coach Association national advantage program? I have received a number of conflicting answers as to being able to purchase this tire under their program. A second question - can anyone offer any alternative brands that fit the specifications and that are all steel radials. Thank you.

I'm in the midst of purchasing some Michelins at Costco...

They have a current promotion of $70 off a set of four tires. Unfortunately, it applies to a set of four only - no prorating. Right around $1700 for seven.

And... a pretty attractive Road Hazard / Warranty program - honorable at any Costco.

I'm going with the M/S 2 tire...

Any special reason for your choice of the XPS ??

According to Cinnabar Engineering, and the various technical literature available, the tires are supposed to be "all steel" and the XPS Rib is supposedly the only Michelin tire of that size that is.

Not to start another tire war but, you do NOT want an steel wall tires on a GMC. The handling is much improved with rag wall tires. Cinnebar is about the only one in the world that still recommends a steel wall tire on a GMC.

There are lots of good rag wall brands out there including Michelin, BF Goodrich Commercial TA, and Kuhmo KL78. You will probably get at least another 5 brand recommendations as this thread progresses. None of the recommendations will be for a steel wall tire.

So I am finding out. I spoke with Jim Bounds at the Orlando Co-Op and he said they are using Nexen Rodian HT and Kuhmo. It would certainly save me a lot of money.

Mine came out of Explorer with Bridgestone V Steels on it.

Changed them for another set of the same 3 years ago, the originals had a bit of cracking in the treads (after 14 years!)

I think it rides and handles great, better than any other GMC Motorhome I have ever driven.

Just my opinion. Laughing

I did check with local Costco and their price for a set of 6 Michelin M/S2 installed/balance/stems/tax is $1,406. TCI price for a set of 6 Michelin XPS RIB installed/balance/stems/tax is $2,000. WalMart price for Nexen Rodian HT installed/balance/stems/tax is $875.

Wal-Mart presence in almost every town of any size, and the no questions asked extra cost warranty is why I bought tires at Wal-Mart. Brand is an unknown Chinese brand, cost a little less than $900 the set. Road trip to International and Bean Station, tires were fine. The out-of-the-area warranty is my driving reason for Wal-Mart. I suspect that they will age out, rather than wear out.

You don't see many ragwall tire carcasses along the highway. It's always an allsteel with shards sticking out. I had to sacrifice a Radial T/A on my Jeep a couple weeks ago. Got a nail and lost air in a construction zone --jersey walls and no shoulder. I had to run it till it went flat and then 3/4 mile to an exit where it was safe to pull off. Lets say it broke fown in a "controled" fashion where the side walls started to cut through but it remained a hot round concentric mass on the wheel. Not much handling upset at all.

I used to be a bf goodrich guy with the coach. I run 245 75 tires so they cost a good bit more. We swap out two tires every 2 years so only buy 2 at a time. I get what I can find at a decent price now. Never had a flat. Also run air pressure sensors on the GMC and toad. I have seen the side of a coach torn up from a blowout. Only 10 ply ragwalls do I buy.

Steve,

I am looking at purchasing tires at Costco also. I am looking at the Michelin X radial LT2, Michelin LTX M/S2 or the BFG Commercial T/A.

If you go through the on line purchase of the Michelins the system will give you a prorate discount on 7 tires of $122.50.

I am probably going to go with the 235/85 -16 X radial LT2.

Why 235/85-16? The direct replacement size (for wheel well clearance, speedo accuracy, pavement contact area, and maybe more reasons) is 225/75R16.

Why not. I have been running the BFG commercial t/a 235/85 - 16
for the last 7 years and they worked great.

I don't see any reason to change the tire size.

I ran E-range Bridgestone steel walls for about 7 years, but didn't like the ride or handling. Finally others suggested BF Goodrich Commercial TAs. Wow, what a difference. Handling and ride were greatly improved, especially on uneven pavement. Not sure if it helped my mileage though.

Rick, I have found that steel belts under the tread, combined with
polyester plies in the sidewalls give the closest road feel to the old bias
ply tires that were used before radials. The all steel tires like the
Michelin's are very harsh and tend to skid more quickly, especially if they
are overinflated. Others have reported similar results. As always, either
type need to be inflated according to the load that they carry and the
speeds that they are driven. Most tire mfg have web sites to explain their
recommendations.

Mike,
NOT TO START A TIRE WAR HERE! You're results may vary!

The only reason that Cinnabar recommends the All Steel tire @80 psi is that GM said that is the tire to use and the pressure to run back in the 70's and Wes will not vary from the party line.

My comments relate to tire style/construction and not BRAND. You buy what you want and then you live with it.

If you put all steel tires in all position on your coach run them as Cinnabar recommends you WILL BE disappointed in the ride and handling of your coach!

We have owned coaches since 1997 ( Eleganza II) and have gone thru several different styles/construction of tires.

The first coach we bought came with Goodyear G159 tires (16.5) which were the recommended tire of the time and it drove terrible. It rut ran and was a handful down the road. The next spring we put on Firestone Steeltex LT225/75R-16 LRE tires along with new Alcoa Rims and it was a completely different coach to drive. These tires were a steel tread with polyside walls. I ran them at 65psi all around. The coach drove with 2 fingers going down the road and I ran these tires until 2007. Granted the rims made a difference in the ride, but the tire were the main player.

In 2007 we purchased a 1975 Avion model GMC and brought it home. It had pretty good tires on it so swapped out the rims and tires to the Eleganza II coach. It had all steel tires on the rear and poly sidewalls on the front and I believe that the tires were all Michelin tires. The coach still drove quite well and other have used this tire combo with success.

Sold the 77 Eleganza II and purchased the Buskirk Stretch in spring of 2011. The new coach had all poly sidewall tires which were Michelin LTX tires (245/75R16 LRE all positions) and they were out of date by a long ways and were in very poor shape. Re-tired the coach with Michelin LTX tires, 245 on the rear and 225 on the front all LRE. Why the 225 tire on the front? The coach has a 3.21 final and a 3.50 chain drive in the tranny. This gives a 3.667 final drive ratio with the 225 tire, but with the 245 tire the ratio went to a 3.50 ratio which is a loss of mechanical advantage. The coach drives extremely well.

I like the Michelin tire, yes I paid a little bit more, but I got several discounts and the time that lowered my overall cost down and they are made in the US or Canada. There are many tire brands out there and most have be tried on our coach with personal success. Buy whatever brands you what or can afford.

Why the difference between the All Steel tire and the Poly sidewall tire. The all steel tire has a much stiffer sidewall tire and will transmit the road conditions to the coach causing it change directions as the road surface changes and is a much harsher ride and could skid easier. The Poly sidewall tire on the other hand has the flexible sidewalls that reduce the transmission of road surface conditions and grips the road better. The Poly sidewall tire setup is the best ride going down the road and there are a large number of GMC owners that have switch to this combination and are very pleased with the results. Most also run in the 60 to 65 PSI range in their tire pressures depending on weight load.

Again, you can buy what you want, but other have found a better ride.
