I see some mention of a Fantastic Vent in the bath buried in a thread about solar or something. I think this is worth having it's own thread. When we bought our GMC it was so dark in the wet bath that we had to have the lights on anytime we went in there. At our first GMC convention in B.S. Mi. I saw what looked like a sun roof in the bath. Found out it was a Fantastic Vent Fan. No need for a light in the bath, even during a cloudy day. Had to have that, even though I had just paid 69 bux for a new standard fan and installed it. Talked with several folks and found out that we were going to be nearby the factory in Imlay City. Was also told they would install.
Long story short, made an appointment and had two holes cut and two reversable 3 speed fans put in at the factory. We had the second put in over the bed as we only have one a/c.
The bath is tight to get one in. Have to make the cut just right. I do not "allow" a pod so that was not a problem for us. I cared nothing about the fan, just wanted the free light. The fan is used while showering with the on demand unit to withdraw. WARNING! Don't have the fan on withdraw when you flush the toilet. Enough said. The fan is used to blow in after shower to help dry the thing out. Never got the smell from the black tank vent but certainly have had an odor from the flushing toilet with the fan sucking upward.
Anyway, there are other brands that may very well fit. I see new ones in the swap meets at conventions for as little as 60 bux sometimes. I always think "what a steal" but I don't need any more, got 4 Fantastics now, counting the portable one we cary.
If there is not, there should be a "pattern" folks can print off to use for installing this in the wet bath. A very good upgrade if you use the bath as much as we do. I think Arch may have put up pictures that show just where to cut. Search the photo sight.

This one change was probably the biggest improvement to the bath. I agree that it really changes the feel from a bit of a dungeon to a much more inviting look. The 'skylight' is a wonderful addition, and it's nice to have a higher velocity fan in the bath.

I agree about not running it in exhaust mode while flushing!

Mickey,
This was one of the first mods we did on the coach. Before we change out the 6" vent fan which had died to the nice standard 14" vent it was like pooing in closet. The skylight sure brightens up the bath. As the old expression goes "It like the difference between nite and day"! I the Avion coach which is being redone will have a vent fan/skylight in the sink area and skylight with small fan in the shower. Stepping into the drybath show is like taking a show in a small closet.

John,

One of the pictures of your shower shows a round vent on the cockpit side wall. Was that original? My Palm Beach has a retractable clothes line in that place.

Another thing that you might want to add is an extra vent in the bath to allow air into the bath if the door is closed and the vent fan is running. If you flush your toilet with the door shut you will have odors sucked up thru the toilet.

See Photo: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/1977-bath/p37079-img-00124.html

You use 2 vents along with a piece of alum duct and put it together.

I have seen a GMC with an actual sky light installed in the bathroom. It was a nicely updated early 23 foot (GM upfitted, side-bath) coach with a pod. The skylight was about 6 inches wide and about 2 foot long. I do not know if it opened but it looked good. I think the "skylight" came from the boating world. I think it was at one of the SOOR rallies I managed to attend and I should have pictures of at least the outside. (It might be a while before I can find them... )

I have also seen windows cut in the side of the coach to get light into the bath. Portholes and the like.

Looking at these pictures reminds me that I have a broken towel ring on my
77 Eleganza. It is similar to the ones in these pictures. Does anyone have
one that they would sell, or maybe a pair. It must be fairly easy to break
so having a spare wouldn't be all bad. Can email me direct ronjohnson at

I took the plunge and cut a hole for a Fantastic Fan and I agree the light makes the bath alot better. We hang glow sticks from the vent knob as night lights so you don't have to blind yourself in the middle of the night.

I can't see why you would suck any fumes through the toilet, since it has a blade valve that closes off the toilet except for a few seconds of flushing.

Randy, it wont suck fumes unless you have the fan blowing out when you flush it. Even then, if you are fast, you may not notice any fumes. We can put our fan on low, blowing in, and it holds the door open, if not latched.

Randy,

We have an easy answer to the night in head problem.
Hazard Fright #95276. I put one on plastic at the after end of the counter with with one of those stick-hooks. It has been very successful.

For some reason we could never determine (while I was working in Thetford engineering), black tanks seem to always have a positive pressure. It may be only 0.5"WC, but it was always positive.

Could the "positive pressure" be a result of tank "contents" decomposing?

Mac,

That was one of our original suppositions also, but it existed even when the tank was dosed with Aqua-Chem that had enough formaldehyde in it to stop an elephant from decomposing. It did get worse with untreated tanks, but not much higher(the pressure, the odor did).

Draw an alevation diagram of the blackwater system.  The contents will pretty much always outgas, and the toilet is pretty much the lowest opening when you flush.

Then I would guess that your vent pipe was not doing its thing.
On my travel trailers, I used the "weather vane" type tops that
follow the wind and act as a venturi to "suck" tank fumes out.

Being the cheap person that I am, I bought only 1 fantastic vent, put in the living room and moved the original living room vent to the bath - that way I get the advantage of light with a little bit of exhaust.
