I sent an inquiry, depending on what side of raleigh , I may be less than an hour away. Budget and wife may not permit me to purchase, but I do not mind inspecting if need be for someone. Assuming trans is sitting on the ground, can anyone share with me what I should see or etc to make this a have to have, or to make it a walk away from?
I also have no problems storing or assiting with transporting if it helps a fellow gmcer out.
thanks bgk

Kerry,

The switch pitch transmissions were installed in 66 and 67 Toronado along with the 3.21 to 1 planetary final drive.

To verify it is a switch pitch the parts tag it will have the following on it:

66 - OJ - XXXXX

Or

67 - OJ - XXXXX

66 / 67 = Year
OJ = Switch pitch (it may be just the O or the J I can't remember)
XXXXX = serial number

Regards,
Rob M.

IIRC, O stands for Oldsmobile and A is for Cadillac (C is for Chevrolet).

Larry,

You're correct as far as the "O" goes. I did some more poking around the Internet and found that the "J" stands for Toronado.

Yes, the second letter is code for the application (I also had an OJ from a '66 Toro long time ago).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the spline on the torque convertor goes all the way down the tube, where the other model only goes half way.
Yes?

I have sent second email thru c list to inquire.
I still have no problem going to check out if I hear back from owner. But I am limited on my knowledge, reference to knowing if should pass o on not. Or is any switch pitch worth getting?

As I understand the case is different, as there are the fluid circuits to operate the two speeds in the torque converter.

The case is the same 66-78.However it was drilled a c-hair different for 66/67.
The top ears mate, the dowel pins mate but the bottom 2 outside bolts are a little different.I drilled my block and have nuts and bolts down there. And yes if the convertor is not with it,you can still get one.The Buick guys are still using S/P for racing.

It is my understanding that only the early Cadillac Eldorado THM425 has the different bell-housing bolt pattern. The Toronado THM425 had the same bell-housing pattern from 66-78. According to info in earlier discussions, the additional oil passages required for SP function are not machined into all THM 425 cases. Later cases (75-78?) are the most likely to not have them.

There are four main external identifiers for a SP THM425. The first three do not 100% guarantee that you have found a SP, but they are very good initial indicators. Only the fourth is a positive id item.
1) a 2 prong electrical connector on the side
2) a data plate with OJ 66 or OJ 67 for a Toronado,
AJ 66 or AJ 67 for an Eldorado
3) a final drive with an 8 bolt cover
4) the large outer splines on the pump housing (torque converter support) are approx 5/8" long for a SP. 1-1/4" long for a normal trans.

I may mot be 100% correct, so it might be best to check with Manny, Bruce Roe, or the other tranny savvy old timers here.

Yes, Brian is correct. I also contacted the seller and this is his reply.

i've got everything except motor. well, actually i've got motor as well but it is apart, albeit, I may not be using it now.

What specifically would you be interested in? The car itself had rust issues in much of the body/fenders.

Same guy was looking for a '67 425 Toro engine for his 442. I had a 66 425 and a 455 that were both out of the car. He didn't want my 66 because it had B heads, he wanted C heads. He didn't want a 455. Offered to sell him a 67 engine with C heads that was still in a car and running good, but instead he bought a complete 66 Toro (with B heads) from someone else. Now he is parting out the 66 he bought. Apparently the 66 he bought had an engine problem he couldn't fix so he asked if I would still sell him my 67 engine. I said yes but I don't have time to pull it for a couple of weeks. Have not heard back from him. Not sure if I even want to.
