inside the door, just behind the latch, there is a thick rubber part ( bumper?) that is quite desintergrated. Are these available?

Appie,
Yes, the rubber gasket is available, you should contact Jim K, Jim B, Jeff at Alex Sirum or Cinnabar. One of these supplier should have the compete door gasket.

Just to be sure I am not talking about a whole door gasket, but a bumper like, rubber item maybe 7" or so that fits behind the lock

I think Jim Kanomata (Applied GMC) has those. I think I saw one at a GMCMI rally on his vendor table. Send him a note and ask.
He is here on GMCnet as JimK.
Or
Here is his web site:

Appie,
Ragusa has them as well --
http://www.ragusarv.com/
click on exterior and go to part RV-118.
As others have mentioned, most of the GMC suppliers carry Ragusa items -- but it is fun to scroll through the Ragusa online catalog.

Thanks everybody
I'll have to put a order together, will be in need for quite some parts before we are ready to go south.
As some people have mentioned before: it is lot easyer to fix things at home with a well equiped workshop, then somewhere along the road on a rainy day
