I am going to Bean Station for the first time and I do have a couple of issues I want to address:
1. I'm told I have Wallace bearings on the coach. Anyone with any special expertise in these elusive creatures, please feel free to volunteer. I already have a couple of people lined up, but probably need all the help I can get. Nothing wrong - I'm looking to do some PM.
2. My Onan is undependable...so what else is new. I would really like to have it working for summer trips. Again, any help would be appreciated.
3. Looking for some good cockpit seats with armrests. Electric control preferred. Also, interested in a sofa for the Driver side of a 76 E II.

Looking forward to the trip.

Stick, you will be in the right place. Lots of bearing men that as well as "nearly" experts on the Onan. They will diagnose it and fix it for you unless you need parts that no one there has to spare. One fun rally.

Stick,

Re item 1)

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/random-photos/p40230-wallace-third-bearing.html

If the zerk works the same way it does in an OEM knuckle you should be able to grease the bearings if you:

1) spray the back of the knuckle / CV joint with degreaser

2) wash the back of the knuckle / CV joint with a high pressure water washer
CAUTION: Do NOT aim the wand directly at the juncture of the knuckle / CV joint where the seal is!

3) dry the back of the knuckle / CV joint

4) remove the CV joint retaining nut cotter pin and nut

5) push the CV joint as far inwards as it will go

6) pump fresh grease into the knuckle until you can see it coming out

7) wipe up any excess grease

8) slowly push / pull the CV joint back into position

9) reinstall CV joint nut, torque as per MM and reinstall cotter pin

Regards,
Rob M.

Dan,

It is actually not that long a run for us, not when you consider that we made Shawnee in two road days - long road days - but two none the less. The only reason I never made it before is that there was too much else going on. We fixed that.

Matt, I know you will give an honest report on the reaction arm for the drum brakes. I think the arm actually helps me stop even when not in panic mode. I can not be sure because of all the 6 new rotors. We did the one ton and rear disc reaction arm at same time. I am not one to report anything except I doubt there is a GMC that will stop any better than our's does now. Went from no brakes to stopping on a dime and getting a nickle back. I am anxious to hear what you have to say after your drive back home.

Dan,

You are correct that I will provide an honest report. At this time, I cannot actually imagine that it will not be a significant improvement. Even at less than full panic stop, I can feel the rear going bad. This may end up being a tough test. I have a light coach and it is Box-Stock.

If it helps mine, it will do more for anything else.

Rob - I'm resurrecting this post from last year because I haven't done the work yet. I've read and reread your post, but am no longer able to open the pictures you posted. I just want to verify that your instructions were for the Wallace Hub.

Anyone else have any comments or suggestions? I KNOW I need the 1-ton front end and that's what I'll do in the long run, but I have a yet-to-be installed Manny reaction arm taking up floorspace at Ken Henderson's, a non-working macerator, a leaking Onan and a dismantled dash. I have to pay our share of our son's wedding in April and the DW just bought a new car that we need to have outfitted as a TOAD.

Bottom line, I need to lube and service the Wallace Hubs and use them while they are good. Any suggestions?

Stick,

Do three things to the Onan,
1 - Replace the rubber fuel lines.
2 - Do the Pertronix mod and get rid of the points.
3 - Get someone that knows how to clean and reset the carburetor.
That can take an half an hour.
Other than that, it is an electrical problem that will need to be diagnosed specifically and corrected.

Stick,

Here's a link to the Wallace Hubs on Gene's website:

http://gmcmotorhome.info/wallace.html

There are two pages, on the first page you will see Second Half in the lower left hand corner, click on that and there are
instructions on how to lubricate the bearings through the grease zerk.

I've edited and expanded my instructions a bit with a view to turn them into "GREASING THE FRONT WHEEL BEARING THROUGH A ZERK FOR
DUMMIES."

1) park the GMC on a level surface, place chocks in front of and behind the rear wheels

2) apply the hand brake

3) place a 2.5 ton (minimum) floor jack under the center of the front crossmember

4) raise it until it is supporting the GMC yet leaving the front tires on the ground

5) remove the lug nuts on the passenger and driver front wheels

6) remove the wheel hub cap if you have Alcoa, Eagle, or other aftermarket wheels

7) reinstall two lug nuts 180° apart finger tight and remove the CV joint retaining nut cotter pin

8) have an assistant apply the brakes

9) remove the CV joint retaining nut

10) jack the front end of the GMC up from the center of the front crossmember until the wheels are off the ground

11) place jack stands under the frame where the front clip joins the frame rails

12) remove the two finger tight lug nuts and remove the passenger and driver front wheels

13) spray the back of the knuckle / CV joint with degreaser

14) wash the back of the knuckle / CV joint
CAUTION: be careful not to direct the water stream directly at seal between the CV joint and knuckle

15) using compressed air blow off any water on the back of the knuckle or CV joint

16) push the CV joint as far inwards as it will go

17) slowly rotate the brake disk while pumping fresh grease into the knuckle until you can see it coming out on the back side
NOTE: if you use Mobil 1 grease this will be easy as the "old" grease will be dark red whereas the fresh grease will be bright
red

18) wipe up any excess grease

19) slowly push / pull the CV joint back into the hub

20) as you push / pull the CV joint back into the hub you will see grease building up between the seal and the CV joint shaft;
remove it
NOTE: re-greasing the bearings with the zerk potentially fills the hub completely with grease making it possible to blow the
rear
seal out of position when the CV joint is seated up against the inner wheel bearing race.

21) reinstall CV joint nut finger tight

22) reinstall the front wheels with two lug nuts finger tight

23) lower the front end until the wheels are on the ground

24) have an assistant apply the brakes

25) torque the CV joint torque as per MM and reinstall cotter pin

26) remove the two lug nuts and install the wheel hub caps if you have them

27) reinstall the lug nuts and tighten them to spec

28) remove the jack stands from under the frame

29) lower and remove the jack from under the front crossmember

30) remove the chocks from the rear wheels

If I've missed anything or anyone has any suggestions to improve this procedure PLEASE let me know.

BTW you don't NEED the 1 Ton front end UNLESS you have a bearing failure. Dave Lenzi has over 100,000 miles on his GMC with zerk
fitted knuckles.

Regards,

Rob - I'm resurrecting this post from last year because I haven't done the work yet. I've read and reread your post, but am no
longer able to open the pictures you posted. I just want to verify that your instructions were for the Wallace Hub.

Anyone else have any comments or suggestions? I KNOW I need the 1-ton front end and that's what I'll do in the long run, but I have
a yet-to-be installed Manny reaction arm taking up floorspace at Ken Henderson's, a non-working macerator, a leaking Onan and a
dismantled dash. I have to pay our share of our son's wedding in April and the DW just bought a new car that we need to have
outfitted as a TOAD.

Bottom line, I need to lube and service the Wallace Hubs and use them while they are good. Any suggestions?

Thanks Matt - after Johnny B and I (mostly Johnny) played with the board and resoldered all the connections the Onan runs like a champ. The gas line has been replaced, btw. Main problem now is a significant oil leak. I had it apart once and replaced the gasket but it must be the seal.

I've cleaned it and watched it but the oil seems to be coming from somewhere not obvious to the 65 year-old eye. I'll catch it sooner or later.

And thanks to you, Rob. The expanded instructions will help. Seeing what I need to do will probably necessitate using Ken's wonderful facility and good nature. I hope to help him drop the Cadillac back into his coach next week.

My comment about needing to do the 1-ton was that I know better than to try and replace the Wallace hubs with OEM. Better to go with new, in the long run or so I'm told.

Stick,

I have developed a sneaky method to find oil leaks on Onans.
Undress the entire engine - take all that sheet metal off. This does mean you have to remove the flywheel. Take the spark plugs out and take the wire off the coil (you don't want that to get hurt by trying to fire with no plugs). Clean everything with brake parts cleaner. Put the flywheel back on - Finger Tight.
Spin the engine with the starter. This will spin it fast enough to make oil pressure and sling oil around. When you get bored or you think you see a leak, take the flywheel off and clean that areas and do it again just to be sure. If you are not sure where it is, go find some spray powder deodorant (I used to use some neat stuff called tracing powder, but I can't buy it anymore) and spray it where you think the leak is.
Spin the engine again.

If the leak is that giant gasket for the timing cover, try to pull the fasteners to torque and it may just go away (or at least be ignorable). Do Not over tighten them. If you do, you can bend the cover and it will never seal.

When you put the flywheel back on, USE A TORQUE WRENCH or you will join the broken flywheel crowd.

*** The above method has been successful three times and not missed yet.

Good Luck

Matt
