so I've been planning on putting sheet vinyl on the floor of the gmc . I've already ripped out the carpet and found a shower trap access in the hallway. What should I do about covering this? Is it really necessary? The carpet was just layed over the top of it before and I never knew it was there.

Dan, that is a removable panel used for access to the trap. Just remove
it, carpet it, reinstall with exposed screws so you can access the trap for
repairs later. JWID.

Why not cut the vinyl where the board and floor meet? That way you can still get to the trap. Seems like a couple of screws hold that board on there. I have not been under there since 07. I don't think it even shows. If you use one piece and do have a need to get under there you can cut it then. One never knows when he/she might need under there. Drain gets loos or another problem, need to get to it.
We did laminant down the hall. I just left the board "clean".

I just did this last week. I think he might be talking about the styrofoam "meat tray" recess in the floor that sticks out from under the shower door a couple inches into the hallway. Mine was carpeted and I never noticed it. I hadn't decided on flooring yet, but when I saw that I wondered vinyl would leave a soft spot along the wall. Having curious kids who would probably investigate a soft spot, I opted for a laminate floor.

GreenC,
Is this what you're talking about?

greenchevelles Dan,

Are you talking about two different things -- gc/Dan referring to the floor, DanG to the kick panel?

My 73, 23 has a large oval cutout in the floor for the trap -- it extends into the hall slightly. Maybe it is there so you can see the trap has failed Very Happy

I think yall have figured it out for him. He was not talking about the kick panel like I thought he was.

I installed Pergo flooring in my coach and had the same problem. The recess and the material that covered it from underneath interfered with the flooring so I cut it away where it was interfering and used aluminum flashing and silicone instead. Here http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/misc-junk/p48861-dealing-with-the-recess-for-the-p-trap.html is a photo of before. There are a couple of other photos with this one that show the finished result.

Yep thats what im talking about. After pulling the carpet out im getting a nice cold breeze from that hole, so there needs to be something to cover it, im also afraid of rodents getting in from there as well. Im thinking there used to be more of the thing there but i can look in there and see the black tank.

I am wanting to install a floor that will be easy to clean and not messed up with water. as the gmc will mostly be used for camping at the lake. Thats why i decided on using just sheet vinyl.
