OK, Got ambitious today and moved my coach, if you recall last June i bought my 73 CanyonLands and blew an oil line driving it home, subsequently seizing the engine. Since then, rebuilt engine, heads, Melling RV Cam, one ton, quadra, yadda yadda.

I decided to move the coach. drove it down the block, turned around at the Mineral Museum and headed back 1000 yards tops, began to back up driveway (slight incline) and ran out of gas. added gas but has no power, can only get my foot in the throttle about 25% secondaries open and engine bogs down and dies. back wheels are about 8" above fronts maybe a foot to 18 inches incline in 26 feet. Tried advancing/retarding new HEI with no avail. come to think of it i'm still running stock gap on plugs. all input will be appreciated. shift into R has positive engagement, trans is not slipping. (stock FD)

Sean, how much gas do you have in the tanks? Switch to Aux tank and
try again. Aux tank is in front and as you back up hill all the fuel
may be going to the front tank leaving the main sucking air.
Right or wrong, that's what I think! <G>

Engine runs fine (with added fuel) still wont back up hill, gets half way and bogs.

Starving for fuel. Plugged filter or something.

Starving for fuel. Plugged filter or something. Maybe water in the gas you fed it last.

What is your vacuum when idling, in park?  If you have less than 12" sitting there at idle, I think you may have a vacuum leak either externally or internally.  In that this is a freash motor, untried this may be the issue.  A motor will idle with as little as 5" of cavuum but as soon as you ask it to do work it will fall on it's face.  Good luck,

BTW, if you appreciate having vacuum to pull over when your motor stops, you have another option than a motor driven pump.  I have simply stayed out of it in that those that promote installing a motor driven vacuum pump have been so persistent, I too feel it's important to hav
e countermeasures here but prefer to do it with a more reliable system.  2 PVC made vacuum tanks, 30"x4" connected in series adding one extra check valve like the one already being used on your vacuum assisted brake booster will give you 4-5 hits on your brake under vacuum.  That should be more than enough to get safely to the side of the road.  This system has to be more reliable in that there are no electrical relays or motors which are the highest failure rate components in electronics.  A system like supplimental vacuum for brakes is something that may never be needed but when it does it really needs to be there for you 100%.  This system is passivem no electrical parts, nothing to check other than periodically kill your motor to see if you have a pedal.  I sell the plans for $5, one part from your auto parts dealer (another vacuum check valves) and the rest of the parts come from your local hardeware store.  I am not willing to debate if the
system works because I have had this exact setup on many coaches, mine has been operating exactly as specified for over 4 years and I have not touched it.

I just want those new lurkers out there hanging on every word to know there are options.  Yes, having a supplimental emergency backup to provide vacuum to your brake booster with your motor off is a good thing but you do not need to go the way of an elaborate electrical circuit and several involved setups to make this happen.  If any of you want to know more about the system you can contact me off line.  It does work well, it is very inexpensive and rock solid reliable...

Thanks Jim, I have great vacuum 19" at idle, I had the carb off, soaked and kit installed, (had fuel weeping at main venturi during idle) i shimmed the main throttle shaft and got an additional 1.2" Hg! Its not the first Qjet i've done, but certainly the first in 20 years (professionally trained as mechanic) I did not touch the air valve, i will be trying that today. I installed a JC4 vacuum pump and realized its necessity immediately...

Got it! The air valve (secondary air flap) was waayyyy too loose, this causes it to open prematurely and bog. Probably as a result of cleaning the gunk out of it. I'm sure the 3rd 5 gal can of premium fuel helped too. Great throttle response now. Thank you to all that responded.

Doh! You told us the secondaries were opening at 25% throttle and we thought you were just guestimating wrong.
