I replaced the trans filter today and am a little worried about how loose it seemed to fit the case. I used a Wix 58882 filter and replaced the o-ring but it still felt loose. I have a Ragusa pan on it and don't know if it is supposed to support the filter or not.
Also, I added 5 qts of fluid which seems to be at least a quart less than I removed.I know the book says 4 qts and the pan is supposed to add an extra qt of capacity but it seems the PO had more fluid in it. I don't know if I can trust the dipstick readings.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,Hal

Hal,

Even the right part number filter can be wrong... see the photo album...

And here

You should have used the old and new O rings.
The Al pan will hold up the filter in place.
The Al pans will hold about an extra quart.
All the filters come from Red China and are crap, but you have no choice.

Todd,
You knew I was holding back.
Since turning 70, I have elected to say it like it is as I'm not here to do
the Dale Carnegie thing. I have spent personal funds at these classes.
I'm in Salem,OR today to attend Jim and Judy Hupy's Wedding reception. It
is great to see people team up and share the life together in a close bond.

Well, I guess my gut feelings were correct. I tried to move the coach and it wouldn't even try to move. It must be sucking air. I'll have to try and save that $8 a quart fluid. I'll drop the pan and add another o-ring and hope that it works. I'll give the man (Manny) a call Monday and see what he thinks-maybe there is a different o-ring although its the same as the one that was in there. I'm wondering if the excess fluid in the trans was there to raise the level above the filter tube. I'd think it would have been spitting fluid out if it were that high. It ran fine and the trans temps were good although the cooler was hooked up wrong (plumbed in parallel instead of series.
Thanks for the replies people, it's a learning process for sure.

Hi Hal:

While you have the filter out one more time ensure that the pipes that goes into oil actually seals into the filter housing. I've seen them leak and yes you will suck air. While it may be hard, or unapealing to do with the oily filter When they come out of the box, I've blown into them to check the seal. Also ensure the lower pipe does not easily spin because they will too.

Can I ask you a favor please?? When you have the transmission pan off can you please inspect the bolt holes on the Transmission flange and check for any that are open to th einside of the case.

Follow this Link for more information and post what you observe. Pictures would be helpful. Any Type B holes??

These trans are sensitive to fluid level.
should you dump the fluid after it has sat for few days will cause one to
dump 6 qts, so if you fill with 4 , your 2 short and it will not work.
Dump in another quart and 1/2 and see if it will help.

What Jim K said makes perfect sense, in fact you posed the question yourself as to why more came out than went in. I'd say 2 qts liw would be a no go situation. Sort of like opperator error but easy fix. The old converter drain back.

I added 6 qts and its a no-go situation, not a hint of trying to move. It must be sucking air at the loose filter o-ring area. Now I have to wait a week or so to get back after it. The GMC is in Albuquerque and I'm in Las Vegas for at least a week. Thanks for the ideas guys. Hal
