Both power plants are good units. I personally like shorter stroked engines. As I have said before. What makes the 455, and the 403 come to life is Jim K's 3:70, and 4:11 final drives when your pulling a load or not. The 3.21 is a help. I pull my enclosed car hauler with one of my Yenko Stinger to road course track events each summer. My gross is in the 19,000 to 22,000 lbs range. My 403 that's in our 78 Royale performs fine. I have absolutely no extra cooling modifications at all. On steep grades. I'll run it up to 4,500 RPM's, and leave it there. One of my Chevy Yenko Stingers has an idle of 2,200 RPMs. I run 3 of my 4 Stingers in the 6 to 8,000 RPM range all the time. My 403 runs so sweet above 3,000. Love it. Bottom line. Leave in your coach, what ever it came with. And enjoy. But DO change your final drive. Changing your chain ratio in your trans. DOES NOT take ANY load off the trans. Pure Physics. Bob Dunahugh.

just wondering, what kind of MPG change do you see with a 3.70 or 4.11?

thanks

8-10 mpg (if you're lucky and the proper stars are aligned) depending on whether or not you tow.

Gene Fisher says it best. You can expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon.

hey all,

check this out. Dodge's new van is FWD, diesel option, 6sp auto and GCVW of 11,000+ lbs. sounds like the ideal transplant into a GMC.

PS, it's the same diesel they are putting in the RAM pickup so i think it is 350-400 FT/lbs torque

I'll take a 403 over a 455 any day, hands down, i to prefer the short stroke, however, I use Jims 3.70 final and when not towing, I get about 70 mpg, hahaha, not really but i will say, I get a lot better than the stated 8 to 10 MPG.

I have an add in the Swap meet asking for any 403 not being used, last year, I install my last of the 403 i had collected, all 7 installed and now i got 7 455, grrrrrrrrrrrrr, anyone have any 403's please, cuz i really want to take out my 455 and install a 403.

Thank you

If anyone is looking for a rebuildable 455 with trans out of a 73 Toronado I
got one for $700.00. This engine came from a vintage wrecking yard in
Pearsonville, CA up by Ridgecrest, CA. Apparently 75,000 miles. Been sitting
outside my shop for several years so not sure if it still rotates. Comes
with a perfectly good Quadrajet from my coach (replaced it with EFI) and an
almost new Pertronics distributor from Dick Paterson (also replaced with CC
distributor when I put my EFI in). Located in SoCal by Temecula. I've got
to get rid of some stuff as my 1935 Dodge pickup project is inhaling cash
faster than you can say Jerry Brown.

Thanks,

Oooh - Ouch. That can’t be un-seen.

Is this an Italian diesel? No disrespect, but as my very attractive Italian friend used to say - Italians don’t make trucks - We make love!

She did frequently, I understand...

Those are not cars Miguel, those are portable GMC engine garages. You buy
the engine and garage and keep it until you need the engine. Then you call
your local engine garage salvage yard and they pay you half of the purchase
price you paid. Easier than going picking up and storing a bare engine!

They are also engine test stands.

(Granted a little large and bulky... but you can start and test the engine!)
