I need to cut out a notch and insert a "structural" pocket in the step behind the driver's seat to accomodate my new jack-knife sofa leg/support/track. It needs to be about 6" deep and 3" wide and a couple feet long.
My head is too fat to stick very far into the engine hatch to see what might be there, and, although my arms are pretty long, I can't feel all the way over to where I need to cut to verify that there is nothing in the way. I don't have the front end high enough to get my fat self under it to look up from the bottom.
Has anybody ever attempted to use that space before? What did you find under there?
If no answers, I will get out the jack and block it up high enough to get my fat self under it to take a look.
Thanks in advance.

Here's a photo (borrowed from Carl) that shows the fuel fill and vent lines in that area.

You should be fine. The PO of my GMC removed the step behind the driver's seat completely to install the jackknife couch.

I've seen photos of coaches with a couch there that have mounting points for belts, but mine didn't. I ended up using a piece of 1/2" high-strength steel cable, run around the frame rail just in front of the 'fridge, along the top of the compartment under the couch cushions, and then bolted to a VERY heavy duty guy wire attachment eyebolt. I used PVC tubing to keep the belt mounting hardware in the right place, though it does have a couple inches of freedom side to side. It ended up being a very nice, clean install, and I'm not at all worried about the strength (it's one of those "by the time it breaks, it won't matter to what's left of the passenger" deals).

First, try an inspection mirror and a flashlight. If you can see all the way to the side of the coach under there, it will save some jacking and blocking.

My couch seat belts where mounted to the wall rail when I removed my couch from behind the drivers seat.
Also if you remove the wheel well on the drivers side it will open up a new world of things you can see and not cut into!
