I need to cut out a notch and insert a "structural" pocket in the step behind the driver's seat to accomodate my new jack-knife sofa leg/support/track. It needs to be about 6" deep and 3" wide and a couple feet long.
My head is too fat to stick very far into the engine hatch to see what might be there, and, although my arms are pretty long, I can't feel all the way over to where I need to cut to verify that there is nothing in the way. I don't have the front end high enough to get my fat self under it to look up from the bottom.
Has anybody ever attempted to use that space before? What did you find under there?
If no answers, I will get out the jack and block it up high enough to get my fat self under it to take a look.
Thanks in advance.

Here's a photo (borrowed from Carl) that shows the fuel fill and vent lines in that area.

You should be fine. The PO of my GMC removed the step behind the driver's seat completely to install the jackknife couch.

The guy hated it so much he drove 360 miles round trip to unload it on me. I doubt he would take it back. Laughing

That's the kind of info I was looking for. From the photo at http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/3/medium/100_8088.jpg there doesn't seem to be anything under the step itself. That's where the sofa stuff is going to be (about 2/3rds of the way down on the right of the photo).

Related question for anybody that has a sofa behind the driver's seat: Is there something to bolt seatbelts to in the floor along the wall?

I've seen photos of coaches with a couch there that have mounting points for belts, but mine didn't. I ended up using a piece of 1/2" high-strength steel cable, run around the frame rail just in front of the 'fridge, along the top of the compartment under the couch cushions, and then bolted to a VERY heavy duty guy wire attachment eyebolt. I used PVC tubing to keep the belt mounting hardware in the right place, though it does have a couple inches of freedom side to side. It ended up being a very nice, clean install, and I'm not at all worried about the strength (it's one of those "by the time it breaks, it won't matter to what's left of the passenger" deals).

First, try an inspection mirror and a flashlight.  If you can see all the way to the side of the coach under there, it will save some jacking and blocking.

If you pull the fender liner (really easy) and turn your wheel, you'll have no problems seeing what under there...which is not much.

My couch seat belts where mounted to the wall rail when I removed my couch from behind the drivers seat.

Also if you remove the wheel well on the drivers side it will open up a new world of things you can see and not cut into!

Shortening the leg and mounting to the top of the step is out of the question?

The "leg" contains mechanicals for the conversion between sofa and bed. I am smart enough to redesign it, but don't own a machine shop. I am not inclined to hacksaw it apart, produce sufficient documentation for a professional shop to be able to manufacture new parts, and then have it welded back together.
Removing part of the step is the path of least resistance.

That's more radical than what I plan to do. I plan to cut out only what I need to in order to drop the "leg" about 6-3/4" into it and box in the "pocket" around it. I will try to remember to post a picture or two when done.
