The steering on my 1976 Palm Beach is "stiffer" than on other coaches that I have driven. Over time ALL steering and suspension parts except the power steering pump have been replaced. Coach handles great- just takes more effort to turn the wheel than a Cadillac.
GMCI Parts interchange lists #7813474 for 1973 and #7818023 for 74-77 and #7827380 for 1978.
O'Rielly also lists different numbers for different years of Toronados.
I'm going to change the pump- hoping for easier steering.
Anyone know what the differences are in the pumps? Why did such a basic part change from year to year?
What's the likely hood of easier steering with a different pump?

Hi Gene: If you remove the hi pressure line then remove the line adapter you will find some spacer washers. Removing the washes will increase pressure. One difference is with or without reservoir.

Jp and Chuck,
Thanks for the tips.
I've asked this question in the past. You're the first to tell me that the pump pressure is adjustable.
Any suggestion as to how many washers to remove?
Didn't recognize you with the beard. Looked good though.

There only 1 or 2 in there, I took all mine out and it didn`t help much. I was advised to replace the valve if I wanted it easier. Kerry is wanting harder so maybe ya`ll could swap valves?

Dan: you have to use a back up wrench on the fitting. Loosen it first then tighten the valve/adapter then hold it whle you tighten the line real tight. Kinda like the fuel inlet in a Q-jet.
WD0AFQ wrote on Mon, 08 April 2013 11:33 | Gene, do you have a pulley puller? I have a pump that has leaked a little for years. Cleaned it up yesterday. Thinking about swapping it out, 1974 GMC. Been told it takes a special puller to get that pulley off. Mine just seems to drip a "dab" back at the high pressure connector. Rarely add fluid but I just hate drips so I have to keep it clean so my driveway stays "spot" free.
Maybe you can try adjusting your pressure as Chuck says and save the headache of swapping it out and trying to get that pulley off.
Let me know what you do. Pictures will be good. I can not see back there very well to tell just what is going on for sure.

I have a pulley puller that should work. I'm pretty sure I'm going to the Miller work rally, and could bring it there if you are going.

Thanks Craig and Chuck. I can not even see the dang fitting on mine. I think the pump will have to come off to do anything, even check it as to where the leak is. When that happens, I want a replacement in hand in case something goes wrong, and a puller for the pump pulley. I doubt I can get the GMC to Miller's. Gas is too dang expensive. 500 miles, or close to it. Would be a that would be a 500.00 round trip for gasoline. But, I thank you Craig.
Not trying to get Gene's thread off topic. He needs information about the pump numbers. I would like to see his pictures when he does the swap.

Dan, Good input.
I don't have a puller, but the last time I changed a ps pump (on my 1989 chevy Suburban) the pump came with a simple puller- just a long bolt, big washer and a bracket. I don't remember exactly but it was simple and worked easily. That was a few years and miles from here so I don't have the puller any more.
Hopefully the pump still comes with the puller. or I can figure out how to make one.

Dang Dan,
You are about as far from Hamilton as you are from Bean Station. If you can't get a puller on a local loan program, mine could be express mailed for not a lot of money. 2# 9x6x2.5
Let me know.

Dan, I just removed the pulley on Sandy's Vette (The Toad)P/S pump and it came off very easy. An old battery cable remover puller would of done it. I installed a hydroboost brake system and added a remote reservoir.

Dog gone it. Forgot what we were talking about. I will borrow one locally or buy one from Harbor Freight when I do it. Think it is a "work rally" kind of job. I will need good advice.
